    What's the go with VAT?

    Hi all

I am just ordering some bits from England and I am not sure if the VAT applies.

Any ideas? The value of the bits I am getting is below 250 pounds.

    Thanks

VAT is not payable on anything that is exported (same applies to GST here), although some suppliers seem to "forget" this. Most will not charge you VAT, though.

If the goods are being sent overseas from the UK then no VAT applies.

If the goods are going through a few hands in the UK before it gets to you, VAT may be charged (the seller has to be assured the goods are going O/S) but when you receive the goods you can claim the VAT back - there is a form you fill out to send to the relevant UK authority for the refund.

Also another thing to be aware of is that not all sellers are registered for VAT, just like you can run a business in australia and not be registered for GST, if you turnover under the required amount then registration is optional. I bought some bits from 2 different ebay sellers. Asked both about VAT, one I got an ammended invoice which was 17.5% cheaper and the other wasn't registered so I paid the price that was advertised. Most sellers apparently will just refund the amount once the items have been posted. It is to be expected that a commercial entity like a land rover parts supplier will be registered for VAT.

    Hope this helps.

Ask an expert. A fellow named Arthur Daley has a car yard just off the Fulham Road. He can often be found in a nearby club.

Sorry to Hi jack, but does the shipping cost get added to the import cost ?
Im looking to get the Ashcroft cv's for my Disco, and it all comes to just under $1000AD but shipping bumps it over.

For private imports shipping is not included.

    Hi all,
I just got some parts sent from UK and found that I ended up paying VAT on items from one supplier but not the other suppliers. When I placed the order I didn't believe I was paying VAT, but on the invoice supplied with the goods it clearly shows VAT added, the total price is still the same as quoted but I was surprised. The VAT amount is only about 4 pounds so I can't be bothered claiming it back, parts were still cheaper than here, its just annoying because the supplier knew the parts were coming to OZ, maybe it was just there invoicing program that automatically adds VAT or requires the field to be filled.
    Cheers Matt

    VAT

I did some checking recently on VAT (Google VAT) and found the following. VAT is payable and NOT refundable on new items purchased over the internet, unless you have a registered GST business in Australia (or elsewhere, not UK). If you personally visit the UK you can claim a refund on the VAT you paid on exit at the Customs barrier. Second hand items are exempt from VAT in most cases. Also the seller of new goods must be registered for VAT, if they charge VAT.
Purchases under $1000 have no GST on entry to Australia, but the freight may be added to make up the total. Best to pay for freight seperately, if too close.

    Hope this helps.
