Thread: One for the car experts - station wagons of the 60s and 70's...

I do not recall any Rover station wagons from that period, except of course the Landrover, but if you count out 4x4s that would be excluded, as would the Jeep, although I'm not sure there were any of these except private imports.

One glaring omission I note is the EK Holden, and the Ford Zephyr probably fell into the sixties as well, but were quite rare. I seem to remember the EK Holden as the first mass market wagon in Australia.

Then there was the Austin Freeway, and Hillman Hunter, I think, as well.

Firstly you said 5 door wagons - so that takes out those with with a rear fold down/lift up tailgate combo and those a tail gate and windup/down window. So most of the big 3 are out.

So do you really mean 4 door wagon? The 60s and 70s were the era of the wagon so just about every manufacturer had a wagon.

What about our own landie 2a wagon - it actually had a rear door on some versions.

Some not so far mentioned are...

Honda Civic 5 door station wagon (bigger version of the hatch but a wagon none the less)
Chrysler (Mitsubishi) Galant came as a wagon too.
VW Passat had a 5 door wagon (very daggy)
There was a Renault 5 door wagon sold here

The list could go on forever.

I'm actually quite surprised how few we are finding here, compared to today anyway.....

But, how could we have forgotten the most famous (or perhaps infamous in some eyes) 1970s wagon on a global scale - the 200 Series Volvo?!

The five door leaves out other sixties wagons such as the VW 1500 and the Borgward Hansa.

Yes the 1500 VW wagon was a classic. I used to own a 1962 Australian sales prototype that came out here 12 months before the model was released. They brought 11 of them out here as a test for reliability and popularity. All went to big companies as company cars. Bought it from the original driver when I was 16 for just $500, hadn't run since 1979 and fired up on 12 year old petrol (albeit badly) as soon as a new battery was put on there.

Wish I still had it.

Happy to include 4 door wagons with a rear tailgate in the list. I was trying to exclude 2 and 3 door wagons (vans/hardtops).

However AFAIK a lot of the euro wagons already had the one piece - modern style lift up rear door...
