What's the possibility of the alternator only charging 10 V in which case the light goes out but the battery drains ? but your wife was one very lucky person, as drivers in that area are not known for their attentiveness :(
time for a second battery with manual switchover ;) and fit a Bosch 120 + amp alt

If LR has done the RR alternator wiring like the 2.7 & 3.0 engines, the alternator B+ goes directly to the starter motor so there's no liklihood of spotting melted insulation. Furthermore, the alternator B+ is via a 400A fusible link to the battery (the same one as the starter) hence improper protection of the B+ cable as I'll bet that the B+ cable wont carry over 400A, unless LR rely upon the diodes going open circuit before the cable insulation (at least) melts.
Ah electronic stuff. That's one of the things I like about my old (96) Defender. Everything is manual (maybe too many things) but at least they just keep working. Mind you if I could afford one I'd like a RR or Disco 3 or 4. I do think that given the situation could have been so tragic the local traffic authority, your insurance company and LR in Australia and England should be advised. Once LR are advised, it could be perceived as criminal negligence to let manufacturing continue without the necessary design changes to ensure the fault is corrected. :)
Is the steering lock electric as well?

Hi folks and thanks for the replies, but the problem is not an outright dead short but an extremely high current drain.
The cause of the problem in itself is not my main concern nor is the fact that the info for releasing the park brake is in the manual.
My prime concern is when the power failed, and it failed in seconds, when it did, the steering lock.
The saving grace was that my wife was on one of the very few straight sections of road, it was a 60 KPH zone, so she was travelling at a slower speed and that it was also a steep incline.
So when everything went dead, the brakes still worked to the point where she could pull-up in a short distance.
Had she been just 0.5 Km further down the road, she would have been in an 80 KPH zone with tight curves and the steering locked up, or if she had been on the Motorway and the same thing happened.
The fact that the steering locks because of a power failure is just insane and one hell of a dangerous and negligent oversight by the manufacture.
I assume the the D3/D4/RRS is the same - maybe a safety recall is in order.Quote:

Hmm, I'd overlooked that aspect of the incident. It sounds as though the lock must be spring-loaded to the lock position and requires power to unlock it, so its surprising such systems aren't outlawed. I wonder if the lock can be permanently removed, even if it means leaving it electrically connected.Quote:
