Hi DiscoMick, as you insert the key, a solenoid disengages the spring loaded steering locks and to be honest, I have never considered this type of failure as a potential problem.

Hi wardy1, it has me scratching my head BIG TIME.

Normally when an alternator does a diode, it can still be used and just discharges the battery overnight while the vehicle is not in use.

And when a starter motor stuffs up in this manor, it’s usually a dead short.

As posted, this is not a dead short, just a very high current draw.

To get at the alternator and starter motor I have to get the RR off the ground. A very good friend of the family owns a heavy vehicle servicing business and has offered to sort the problem out for me so I will leave it in his capable hands, especially as he did his apprenticeship at Land Rover, all be it many years ago.

My money is still on the alternator being the problem but I won’t know what the cause is till my mate gets his hands on the RR.

I will keep you all ( and LRA ) informed of what turns up.

This certainly is not a one off,
I recently purchased my wife her dream vehicle...( D3 HSE in this case.) preferred over RRS (As more troublesome although similar platform) I at this stage am determined to sort the damn thing.... But.... I cant trust the bloody thing for the wife and kids anymore.
Crazy how they just shut down big time and wont always reset. I have blamed the aux battery set up etc but not the issue.

I have so far found major voltage leakage on the earth return side in this one.

I must say, A well maintained stage on drums and leaves is likely safer than some coilers with disc at the same speed!
If your referring to the drums, they actually work very well when dry.:angel:

Must admit I havent driven a coiler that was that bad

80 MPH at GVM :eek: boy that would have been wound up tight :) white knuckle stuff that :D


Would be something similar to a 2a loaded with bluemetal trying to stop from 50mph on unboosted drums :(

Unfortunately it is a sign of the times.I remember when we got around fine with seat belts and high and low beam headlights,now we are so dumb we can't survive without ABS,stability control,traction control,6 airbags blah blah. Pat

Hi Pat and I have no problems with all the safety devices installed in most vehicles today.

They are designed to save lives.

On the other hand, the steering lock is nothing more than an anti-theft device and is there for no other reason than to meet insurance company requirements.

Before I even start to try to find out what has caused the electrical fault, I will be pulling the steering column apart and permanently disabling or removing the steering lock.

I have no intentions of so much as starting the motor before I have removed the danger of the steering being locked up again.

yes, all the safety systems are required to remain independently operable for a period after a complete electrical failure, from memory its about 15 minutes, thats why theres so many safety warings about working with airbags and seatbelt tensioners.

no only once removed
