Hi Stig and NORMALLY, the steering only locks once the key is removed and you can not remove the key unless the transmission is in park.Quote:

power failure in modern vehicles is common.also system failures from surges related to heavy power demands including air bags deployment.
several months after the IRS pajero was released I came across several single car accedents with upturned models with light camper trailers and at the wreckers auction upturned subaru wagons caused from loss of control on well maintained highway roads.
the steering lock shouldnt relock unless a key is removed.this should be retrofit repair to all of these timebomb models.
P76 was recalled and the locks replaced years after production stopped for floor shift cars due to the possibility of a lock engaugment.
the trans park lock is a common fault had to rock the falcon ute several times to unload the park pawl.in newcastle wolf street has been a tow truck dream with locked transmissions and steering breakages.
taking a lot of education to get people used to deep cycled and glass mat batteries with electronic controls and common rail diesels.
so many experts around with different opinions.
had so many experts that had me pull new cars apart looking for wiring faults because the battery cant fail without a cause story,and you should have have to charge the battery on a car thats diven once a fortnight.
The "we have customers that rarely use the car and do short trips without problem" speach.only to talk privatly to engineers tring to fix the placment of the battery in the boot issues without sucsess or the writeups about VE commodore owners getting battery chargers so the car wont stop in melboune traffic.
from the posts hear the coment is that it must be a starter short or a alt diod failure.[might well be as it fits the description].after checking look at other things.I recieved denso training that refered quickly to duty cycle engine ecu output that was used to assist with idle control by unloading the alt.
I had milk trucks shut down mid road when used for deliveries at night as systems simply wasnt intended to stop start running with lights on.
our fire trucks we fittted battery chargers on timmers.
The power assist on the brakes would still work for the 1st application at least. The steering, if not locked, would be quite heavy though.Quote:

Marketing and over-zealous regulatory bodies have turned this around to the extent that we have- as has been pointed out - computers to do everything but physically place us in the car seat !
Road accidents have always been caused by drivers, their incompetance, inexperience, ego, distraction, emotional immaturity...and poorly designed and/or built roads & surfaces.
Right at the bottom of the list add 'health' issues such as fatigue, (more of a work-related & social problem) sudden death at the wheel, inadverdant prescription medication side-effects and weather etc.
At the very bottom add sheer bad luck when lots of innocent factors add up to tragedy.
Naturally, the Safety and other Interested parties want to blame such heinous offences such as removing a 3rd row seat from a wagon as turning said vehicle into an unlicensed 'death-trap', not to mention such wish-lists as banning bull-bars on 4WD's - which they argue will "save many lives".
Worst of all, is that the public accept whatever 'motherhood' statements they make, and the car-makers are happy to put more and more stuff & toys into them to gain a sales advantage...and support groups such as ourselves 'accept' whatever is dished up... and keep buying the newest and latest rip-offs.
Its my impression that Land Rover has never been a good listener,ignoring the very people that pay their fat salaries...
How many of us have written off to LRA to object to the way Mrs Traxide was placed in mortal danger ? - Or to the motoring writers of your local rags?
- Will we be seeing any letters to the editor about this particular or other incidents in our AA, RACQ, RAC, NRMA RAC-Vic etc magazines. ???
The 4WD world got itself very, *VERY* agitated about the rumour of losing our bull-bars.... the damage to our egos as great as potential panel denting (or the odd loss of life).

Hey Drivesafe, Dam interesting event so thanks for the post , it'll make me go out and make sure I know how to get the vehicle out of park and look into the steering lock issue as that's just outright scary.....

Sounds awful, glad no one was hurt.
I'd have trouble regaining my trust in a vehicle after something like that.
a massive outcry about power windows after newcastle floods.
falcon sedan/wagon has only an electrial entry into the rear.
with a ford cargo barrier a ford supplied extra release cable is fitted.
the dealer didnt have any with the fitting kit and i havnt found one at a wrecker.
I thinking i should fit a window breaker hammer/belt knife and then i thought i shoud have 2 one on each side.

Bought the new fangled car this year with more bells and wistles than I can poke a stick at, and we Love it. I now want heated seats in all the cars but a friend has told me a hydrogen generator under the passenger seat doesn't count.Quote:

A majority of eople now-a-days want all the bells and whistles..
They dont want to have to turn a key, wind a winder or lean 6 inches to adjust a stereo...
They dont want to feel the bumps from our horribly maintained urban roads or to experience the accoustic feedback of a vehicle in motion...
They want the space of a 2.5t vehicle with the handling of a 800kg sports coupé
And as long as the punters are willing to seperate a large portion of their income on something with all these features they will continue to make them more and more like a mobile lounge room.
Same story with Caravans... Those things are now 2.5-4t on a regular basis and the size of a small group of shops...
Put bluntly - people are softer now and far more materialistic
