New 2010 RRS in the Kimberley

Three weeks into our 5 week trip to the Kimberley and I have to say the RRS has performed faultlessly. 3 days at Karijini, a week on the rough coast around Pardoo, a few days at Cape Leveque north of Broome...and not a blot to report.
Towing a one ton camper trailer over some pretty gnarly roads, and some seriously soft sand and corrugated tracks, the car is without peer. The dust sealing is brilliant...er, except for when I lifted the lid on the tool tray and discovered they'd forgotten about that bit.
All said and done though, very impressive. And I love the extra oomph the ECU remap has provided for the 3.0L diesel.
Just one word of warning...avoid Kumarina roadhouse for refueling if you have an emotional attachment to your money. At $2.02 a litre it's a bit of a gouge. Nice spot though.

Hi Greg, Yep there's a few roadhouses up that way that should be avoided for exactly the same reason especially nanuturra and fortesque river if you happen to be coming back via the coast road.Good to hear that your travels are going well.

Good to hear the new vehicle is going so well. I'm interested to know if you thought it necessary to take any extra precautions against fuel contamination, it's been in the news a bit lately, and I'm wondering if it is really an issue with these new 4x4's. Cheers, sounds like a great trip, I'm green with envy,Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

Don't get me started on the Nanutarra Roadhouse. Fuel price was hideous, luckily I didn't any due to aux tank, so i had a coffee while other unfortunates I was travelling with got reamed.

Coffee was $4.95 for make it yourself instant muck out of a huge catering tin. I can cope with that but the miserable old crone barking at me to put the milk back in the fridge was a bit too much.

If this was typical of outback roadhouses then I wouldn't remember it, but they're good people by and large so a mob like this stands out.

Nanaturras always had a bad rep. Not only is there fuel expensive their meat pies are reputed to cost 10 bucks each for just an ordinary pie with a bit of mince and gravy!!
I have no personal knowledge of these things as I drive past with a cheery wave, but tales of rip offs there are legendary around camps.

Been there and been done too!! There is nothing else even close and they know it. Without choice they can get away with it. The fuel truck has to go past them to get to stations further north, so you would think the costs would be cheaper. I could stand paying a touch more for the convenience ( better than no station ) but the associated lack of service and profiteering on almost inedible foodstuffs is way over the top. Another reason I have a long range tank installed !

Hey if you drive past Nanutarra regularly as I do on way to Paraburdoo you soon learn to top up at Manilya to make the distance. Also good to hear the Rangie is going great, also took off with a new LR4 with camper last year and did remote areas (16,000k) with no probs.

It's been a while since I've been to any of the roadhouses mentioned here - but I had a great burger & chips at Capricorn yesterday while waiting to fly home.
    Cheers .........

    Pics coming soon:)

Yeah I know...pics will be coming soon, when we get back to Perth. For some reason I can't figure out how to upload pics from the IPad I'm using, so will have to wait till I'm back in front of the computer at home.

Writing this from a rather unsteady wireless connection at Mt Hart station, 50km off the Gibb River Rd. Still no complaints, the car is behaving brilliantly. Have had to cross many flooded creeks, including some particularly gnarly mud sections, one of which tore the front number plate off (it was fortunately found lying in the creek a grew hours later and returned by another kindly camper) - the Wet up here was very wet this past summer, so there are still several roads impassable, including much of the Kalumburu Rd.

Through it all the RRS has been (almost) faultless...apart from one creek crossing where I forgot to raise the suspension, which the electronics objected to and produced a 'suspension system fault' warning...it righted itself soon enough by switching the engine off and restarting ten minutes later.

And so far, no issues with fuel quality. For those interested, fuel at Imitji store is substantially cheaper than Mt Barnett, at around $1.91 a litre.
