call marc at beechboro 4x4 , or better still the series man himself peter at west coast rover , or peter snook at western four wheel drive
Hi All,
Ok, just had a quote to do the timing gear on my SIII 2.25D in Perth. Cost at $99 per hour, and quoted 14 hours labour being $1386!! Just had the same done to a truck in the UK, cost 150GBP (~$290), including parts! Think its cheaper to buy the dial gauge and a few other special tools myself.
But I lack the experience, so the call goes out to anyone in the Perth area, with the skills and maybe some free time in the next month or so, to undercut that quote?! I would be very interested to here from you!
Cheers, James

Hi James. Give Kevin at RoverTech in Bentley a call as that seems like a lot of labour for the job.
Or search the WA forum for mechanics and be careful who you choose.
Alan.
Well, that was from one of those mentioned above...not going to name names though.
I would agree the labour looks a little high. But then I have never attempted the job myself, although I have removed the rad/grille on several occasions and removed a stripped a compete engine in less then half the time quoted.
Also I must add that quote was with me supplying all the parts, which, thanks to the wonders of international airmail arrived at about half the cost.

Give it a go yourself. Not hard. No special tools required. The only difficult part is removing the pulley nut and pulley.
Why does it need doing? The timing chain normally lasts at least as long as the rest of the engine!
The alloy sprocket teeth (idler gear I think) and half a steel roller from the chain in the sump say to me the engine has outlasted the timing gear!![]()
Well, I will be getting a dial gauge a massive crescent wrench and some scaffold tubing - the power of leversJust got to figure out a way of stopping the engine turning over.
The truck will be arriving in Perth in the next month once a find a rental, and if anyone feels like popping by....Vic Park area.
I'll also add Trevor from British 4WD in Welshpool to that list - he tends to get all my Landy work now. 08 9362 4444.
