    Cranking battery life?

Just curious to see what kinda life everyone is getting from their cranking batteries.....

Went to check the coolant level on my XR8 tonight, and discovered that the battery had gone flat yet again, despite being on charge for a few hours on saturday afternoon, as well as spending a couple of hours cruising the backroads.

The battery is a Delkor calcium type, and has lasted since october 2008, so at 2.5 years I cant really complain, but what disappoints me is that its predecessor, exactly the same brand/model, lasted 4.5 years after I bought the car, and from the paperwork I got with the car, the battery was already a year old, which means that while the second battery lasted an otherwise acceptable 2.5 years, the one it replaced lasted twice as long.

In the last 3 months the XR8 hasnt been driven much, but for the last 7 years it was my daily driver, and the battery has only just shown signs of failing in the last 6 weeks, signs that I had initially put down to the car not being started for a few weeks, nevermind driven anywhere....

So my question is, how long do your cranking batteries last?

the deff has a 1300cca battery thats used for frige/winch and starting,, would be about 3.5-4 yrs old i guess, b4 i could have the fridge on allnite and radio on and it would start perfect the next day even after a few hrs in the morning of having the doors open, allso taken a tru flogging from the 12lb winch,

but last trip out it took a few more struggling terns b4 it started after a nite on the fridge,,

now i dont trust it to make the nite, and the other day i decided to run out of fuel,, so alot of cranking to get it started, after about 10mins i gave up as it was struggling to tern it over, needed a jump then,

im not very nice to batterys tho its been run dead flat multiple times,

I've had my current Disco four years, so we'll say the best case scenario is that the battery is four years old. It could have been in much longer. It's still fine, but I just installed a dual battery system and relegated it to the aux position for peace of mind. Being a cranker I'm not expecting it to last long with deep discharges.

BTW, the highest terminal voltage I was getting with the engine off after 24 hours was 12.44, so about 77% SoC. There's nothing wrong with the charging system on my car, so that alone was what hurried me up to replace it.

    try 2 x 6volt in series instead

maybe the oldies had it right after all.

There is a lot more capacity having two, six volt batteries in series, rather than two, twelve volt batteries in parallel, given the same case sizes in both cases.

two, in series six volt batteries, will last for years longer as well.

its the time of year and im replacing batteries.
we get 1-2 years from lawn tractors,3-4 years for hilux.
5 years for fire trucks and large tractors.

replace a hilux battery with a bosch.[original was GS MF105D].
    its lasted 3 months.
it tests fine with load test but the magic eye shows black needing charge.

takes a weekend to recharge it.these utes are used on 8hr day stop start running.

Just replaced the battery in the County, lasted four and a half years. Thinking of replacing the battery in the tractor, lasted seven years. Can't remember how long the last battery in the 2a lasted.

The best I've had from a battery was 7 years.
4 years on my Defender then the deep cycle battery played up so I replaced both. The cranking battery (a Delkor calcium) then sat in the shed for a year with an occasional charge then got installed in the Series 1 and I got another 2 years out of it.
To be fair, both Land Rovers are only occasionally used but I'm not sure a lack of use and then a top up charge is the best way to extend their life.

The battery place I buy from has a range of batteries. For example in an N70ZZ they may have 6 variants from an El Cheapo through to marine and deep cycle types. I always get the calcium type which tends to be the top end of the cranking batteries, they seem to last 4 years plus.

This thread reminds me, I must charge the batteries on the S1, S2a, S3, Defender & the caravan this weekend.....

Most definitely is not! I attribute the fact that my tractor battery has lasted seven years so far to the fact that, while it is only used occasionally, it has a very small solar panel connected all the time it is not in use, and I would suggest this for anyone who has a vehicle that is only used occasionally. (Before I got the solar panel, average life of batteries on it was about two years)
