    Watch Your Bank Accounts

Fuelled the Disco today and when I went to pay for it, kept getting a "rejected" message on the EFTPOS machine.

Fortunately, I only use the one garage in Kal, and they were happy for me to go off and get it sorted and pay them later - so off to the bank.

Turns out that there had been an unusual transaction on my account - US$1.64 at "The Sands Hotel" somewhere in America. This was picked up by my bank (BOQ) - they tried to contact me to see if it was legit, but I've been away on a minesite and out of mobile range - so they froze the Visa Debit Card that someone had tried to make this transaction on. I could still make transactions through internet banking (which I had done a couple of days ago), but the card was now inactive until I contacted them.

Now that I have spoken with them, they have listed the business in the US as being untrustworthy on some database that all Australian banks refer to, and are in the process of issuing me with a new Visa Debit card. In the meantime, the local branch has issued me with a temporary EFTPOS card so that I can still access funds in the account - and I was able to go straight back to the garage and pay for my fuel.

Apparently this is a pretty common scam at the moment. Someone gets hold of your card details (usually through an internet purchase where you've provided your details, or more recently through dodgy EFTPOS machines which people have fitted skimming devices to. They then conduct a small transaction on your account to see if it goes through and is usually unnoticed, before they jump in and rip off everything you've got with one or more larger transactions.

So I'm pretty pleased with the vigilance of the Bank of Queensland in picking this up and possibly saving me a lot more stress that I can really do without.
    Cheers .........

I've also had my card details stolen. CommBank were excellent - they detected the fraud (originating from the UK in my case), suspended the card and refunded the fraudulent transactions.

Apparently it is common for a small transaction to be put through first (eg less than $5), followed by a more substantial transaction which in my case was about $600.

Not needing to sign is to do with the new paypass that is being brought out. There's a limit to it, usually around $100, but less in places like McDonalds. You can only do it three times in a day, and if you report your card stolen the bank will refund you the value of any paypassed purchases. So it's pretty safe all up, so long as you realise your cards gone.

Transactions under a certain amount (about $30?) no longer need signatures. I also have a proximity feature on one of my credit cards that works for transactions up to $100 without a PIN or signature. Just hold the card near the reader. I wonder how long it will be until crooks are walking around with mobile eftpos devices and scanning people's cards while they're still in their wallets.

Happened to me last month..a .99c transaction went through, and then a .79c one, both somewhere in Asia, the ANZ ( my bank ) red flagged it as unusual, then cancelled my card on the spot when a $4500 Apple store transaction was attempted, again in Asia...good work by the bank i thought!.

    cheers,

When SWMBO'd went into a jewellery store to buy our daughter a birthday present, Westpac were on the phone within 5 mins of leaving asking if she actually transacted the purchase, as she never usually goes there. Not a bad effort I thought.
