G'day, welcome to the forum, Tas. One thing to check is your brake stop light fuse. Believe it or not, the Defender and Discovery TD5 alternator is fused thru the brake/ stop light circuit. [ from Data booklet from QX components] Always check the fuse before replacing the Alternator. I've never had the pleasure of an alternator replacement, but can recommend highly the purchase of the RAVE DVD, from the " shop" section at the top of the page. It gives step by step instructions for just about any repair you might want to do yourself. Also, visit " THE GOOD OIL", lots of info there. Might pay to post future technical questions in Technical chatter, or the D2 section. Let us know how you get on, Bob

I think bob meant to say Technical Chatter, or 90 110 130 Defender County section .

What Bob said, Mine Blew up too just after I bought it and I needed it fixed quickly as we were going away for Xmas. I wished I had done it myself, I was charged $1400.00 For a new one( fitted). I know I could have done it for a lot less than half the price.

Get the Rave CD and have look around for a new altenator and fit it yourself. Plenty of options but avoid the dealers as you will pay too much for the bits.

Can your alternator be rebuilt rather than replaced? Could save you a motza.

They certainly can be rebuilt. I rebuilt mine for just under $150. Took it into ashdown ingram and they had all the parts on the shelf, apparently the alternator is used in some toyotas (minus the vacum pump)

They are not that hard to take out and put back in. Takes about an hour, or a little longer if there are beers going down range.

I've just replaced the alternator on mine and this was a pretty handy thread.
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...td5+alternator .
I got mine out without having to remove the vac. pump. I had to replace mine as I couldn't get a new slip ring for it.

If you're looking at getting one from overseas this might be worth a squizz too.

    Cheers,
    Anthony.

ps. Apologies, I overlooked the bit where yours is Deefer as opposed to mine being a Disco.
