Yes, for those who want to give money to the homeless, but do be careful. a couple of years back one man told me he was homeless and his kids were starving, and we were only 50 meters from an Aldi, so I said, I do not have a lot of money [that was true] but come over with me to Aldi and I will buy you some food to take home so your kids can eat.
He said no thanks I only want cash, and went and asked some Asian tourists who gave him some money. My guess is he was after a fix.
But many others are genuine. I do know a lot of homeless people.
One, Bob [not his real name], a man I have know for about 4 years, a man who has schizophrenia, and has previously escaped from a mental ward, is one Homeless guy that I know well and like well. I was told that Bob was a former medical doctor in Romania [he is very intelligent],
I spoke to Protective services once, about Bob, as they control all his money and put some in the bank each week for him. See Bob had lost his bank details, and was eating out of garbage bins & fish he caught [he had lots bits of fishing line he got off the rocks when a fishing line had broken wrapped around a plastic bottle, would feed fish stale bread the baker threw out bread at night were tourist feed them during the day then catch one of these bream] so Chris, a homeless gambling addict from Canada, asked me to drive them down to Department of Social Security, to get Bob onto the dole. See Bob could have had money from Protective Services, but had had his bank details stolen, and did not go to get new bank details himself, as he would have to give them his name and he does not like giving people his name. For the first 6 months that I knew him, I knew him as Bob, but that is not his name.
That visit to Social Security was funny as Bob does not trust government, and so Bob would not give them his last name, and we did not know his last name, just knowing his correct, but unusual first name by that time. But eventually we tracked down who Bob was with the help of a social worker, and got his money to go back into his bank account. But Bob hates banks. Protective Services had stopped putting Bob's money in his account wen he had stopped withdrawing money having had lost his bank card.
Protective services asked us to get Bob into housing and they could help out with the rent [they hold at least $100,000 of Bob's money in trust].
Bob speaks at least Six languages. Once I found him a online polish Bible on the internet that he wanted to look up a word in it [I do think he was Polish]. Sadly his nieces do not want to see him whenever he tries to go and see them at their workplace on the Gold Coast. Bob is a funny guy in that a lot of the time he will only speak only in Hebrew to those who try to help him. He learnt Hebrew 20 years ago while sharing a room with some Hebrew speaking Christians.
Someone gave him a couple of books of the Bible in the Hebrew [ in one bulky volume of a four or five volume set of the Hebrew Old Testament books]. I decided to get him a whole Hebrew New Testament, with English on the page opposite the Hebrew page, and I found one of these free on the Internet for the conversion of the Jews, so asked them to send me two [one for myself also]. I did tell those people Bob was NOT a Jew [as far as I know--have not worked out his origins, but think he is Polish], but told them he reads Hebrew Fluently [I am not a Jew, but read Hebrew a little Bit, but not much], so I knew he knew Hebrew much better than I do. So After going to that trouble and giving him the Hebrew/English New Testament, Bob went and gave it away to an Aboriginal who wants to learn the Hebrew. I got Bob using the Internet where he found the Pe****ta Bible [Syriac Bible] online in an online interlinear of the Gospels. So Bob found a site with the old Syriac Pe****ta alphabet, and taught himself to read the ancient Syriac [I did not put the *** in this word. The computer, either the server, google Chrome, or AULRO. or a government censor edited this word. and Peshi-tta [hythen added by me to stop further censorship of this valid word] is not a naughty word, the letters edited out meanin Faeces, but the missing letters are Seirra Hotel, India, Tango, for those who know the phonetic alphabet, the edited word being spelt as one word as Papa,Echo Seirra Hotel India Tango Tango Alpha,. No wonder Bob never wants to give his name to the government. Bob has been bashed by police for refusing to give his name, and I do not knock the police force as a whole].
A few years ago, before I first met him, Bob decided to help himself by doing some gardening, and purchased a wheel barrow, spade, garden fork, etc., made himself a sign saying "gardening work wanted" and stood out in the weather at Burliegh heads for two weeks trying to find someone to give him some gardening work. He sleeps out and woke up one morning and his wheel barrow and tools were gone.
Sadly after that Bob gave up getting gardening after that.
Forget his name, and have not seen him for two years but Bob had a friend who slept on the floor in public toilets wearing a suit and bow tie, and was indignant that a cleaner hosed under the door soaking him one day. It was this suit/bow-tieman who had told me Bob's real first name.
Rose, another sometimes homeless girl, who is always getting bashed by her homeless boyfriends [Rose has a new alcoholic boyfriend too often, but they all bash her. Rose says she needs them to protect her].
Rose went and told her story to the Newspaper after they offered her a $50-- Woolworths food voucher for her story, as she needed to eat. So Rose said publically that she is a sex addict and an alcoholic, etc, and as the newspaper used her name, I have used it. Rose got into a lot of trouble from other homeless people for what she said to the Newspaper about why she was homeless, but Rose said she needed to eat,
I know Rose was very smart. One day I saw a large bag thrown in the rubbish bin, and pulled it out with Rose's belongings in it. This included her resume which I did read, ant first to find out who owned the bag [at that time she was working in a beach front fast food shop, but they fired her after they found that she slept under a bridge with her alcoholic boyfriend]. Someone complained. Rose's Resume indicated she was fairly smart, and had worked in Canada as a ski instructor.
Ray, another schizophrenic homeless guy I know, saved up and purchased a Land Rover defender for $8000 [He thought the Kombi campervan that he owned & lived in, would not last, and wanted a better car, so he could go bush]. His marriage failed a few years ago after being locked away after a drink dive incident and his wife and child moved in with another man. Ray inherited a lot of money but gambled it all away before giving up gambling [at least I think he has given it up]. Ray has owned and has been ripped of sailing boats [about 23 footers]--he lived on one of these at one time, but gave it away for nothing to a man who then sold it for $10,000. His next boat dragged anchor in a storm and smashed into an expensive boat, and the Maritime authorities/the other boat owners were after him, so he also gave away [sold for $100] that second boat and fled.
Bob & Ray are gentle souls who would not hurt a fly but cannot get their heads together.
But I believe that we should never abandon such people, and will always talk to them. Some at the soup kitchen where I go and talk to these people, are very intelligent smart people.
I remember in Manly, NSW there was a homeless women which used to inspect the rubbish from bins looking for food. She used to dress with about 6 layers of old clothes.
One =day we found out that she was for Scandinavia and come to Australia with her husband. He passed away as soon as they arrived and she went crazy of sorrow and finished Homeless and mentally incapacitate.
Which kind of choice she had if she was mad?
That is very unfortunate and honestly is quite sad to hear but....
I personally know a guy who was sexually abused by his own father and older brothers. He left his "family" when he was 14. Yes he's messed up and a bit weird, likes a drink, likes his drugs etc BUT he has a family and holds down a job and he's keeping it together.
Point is just because it happened doesn't mean it has to put you on the street. He'll be fighting his demons forever but he'll be stuffed if it's going to ruin his life!
I'm not having a go and I can see you're passionate about all this, but we still have choice's.
Well put and it is one of the things I have stressed to people in the past...**** happens...some worse than others......but you still have choices. Some will wallow, flounder and drown......that is a choice......others will decide to swim and stay afloat........that is also a choice.
Based on my experiences in life and what I have learnt...once you get to a certain age....their are no excuses...only choices,
Regards
Stevo
All correct and well said.
ALL of us have a choice in how we lead our lives, Free will to choose our path and actions, and live with the consequences. Sure bad things happen and some are very hard to get over, if ever. Having people and organisations around to help those effected get UP and on their way is a great thing - IF they want to be helped, as some don't:(.
Never before has ' Think before you act' and 'Look before you leap' been so useful an expression.

You people **** me, what would you blokes know, unless you have been affected yourself, you know nothing:twisted:
Someone makes a comment to make people aware of a disgraceful situation and it turns into an arguement. un****ing believable:twisted:
Baz.
it's all very nice that many have coped.
some simply can't and some show a complete lack of compassion for those less fortunate than themselves and that is considered by many to be a major flaw in a personality, so people shouldn't be surprised that it ignites a reaction.
it's been my experience some people simply don't get a choice or get the chance to exercise choice for what ever reason. it's life equivalent of the ricochet..
a few hours helping out at a ST Vincent De Paul hostel might be a source of enlightenment but somehow i doubt it would alter some mindsets...
