    Insurance for club reg 4WD

I just took out a Classic Car insurance policy with RACV on my 2A Shorty, after being on hold for 48 mins

When I said it was a Land Rover they asked if the vehicle would be used 'off road'. I asked them to define what they mean by 'off road'. He said they don't cover the vehicle if it's driven on tracks with "river crossings and that sort of thing".
So, to clarify, I asked if I would be covered if I was driving on a track in the bush, with a name, which was a public, gazetted road, but it was a rough track. He said that was fine if it is a public road. So the way they put it is a bit ambiguous, but in the end it seems you are covered as long as you are on a public road, including bush tracks which are 'official' tracks (public roads)
I forgot to ask about driving on private property, but I think you would be covered as long as you weren't doing something stupid or using the vehicle for competition.

Overall it's a pretty good deal. $58 for full comprehensive insurance ($2000 agreed value) including $3000 per year to cover major breakdown (accommodation etc) more than 100 kms from home. This is included in the policy, even though I have Total Care.

Try to get their definition of offroad in writing. I got a similar description as you once and I responded so it is covered on the eastern beach of Fraser Island - response was no - my response was but it is a gazetted road - then they just said it was not covered and refused to discuss further.

So get the definition of what is offroad on paper and challenge some of the conditions. Remember if you have an incident and they decline a claim of the basis of being off road - you may ultimately win in a court but for $2000 and a legal bill most likely higher it will not be worth it other than to prove a point.

I am insured through Lumley special vehicles and it is covered anywhere.

When I took out insurance with RACV and asked about inclusions, my questions were answered on the phone. When I asked if this was clear on the policy, I was told I could quote my number and tell them to listen to the taped call as verification of what I was sold / told. So asking pertinent questions on a taped call could save a lot of future hassle.

I had a similar issues with the NRMA a while back - their tapes conveniently no longer there - I had pushed record on my answering machine so had evidence.

I would not be relying on the insurance company to support your position.

With the $3k for major breakdown this must be their first LR that they have insured.
