Dunno about the larger Dysons, but I made the mistake of buying one of the re-chargeable battery hand held units a while back for jobs like doing the car. Biggest waste of money I've ever made - I've also got a Black & Decker that craps all over it.

As for the larger style in the house - have had the same old Vax for over 10 years now - still doing the job.
    Cheers .........

Thanks for that, wife lusted after one of those handheld things, and neither of us believed the Choice magazine review that reflected your experience.

I went in to buy some cleaning stuff for the carpet and there was a brand new Kirby sitting there.I asked how much he was selling it for......$500.
It came with all the attatchments as well. They only get them in every now and then.
Bought mine of fleabay for $1000,but that was 6 years ago, only replaced the bags and 1 belt.

I called a couple of godfreys, they all had used ones for sale but they were very old models and cost a bit much.

+1 for the Dyson. bought one about a year ago and the misses is thoroughly happy with it...

my Mum bought a kirby a few years ago and it sits in the closet, its to heavy and the attachments are to cumbersome to fool with for her...

Yep, same downUnder, the Kirby is too heavy for most women to use on a regular basis.
    - My missus 'requested' that I do the vacuuming with it...

Lets just say the salesman wasnt impressed and my mate now owns a Dyson...
We did a similar thing years ago...

Kirby salesman came, did all his usual tricks, the last being to put a piece of black material over the outlet in place of the bag. Actually, it was a special fitting which held the fabric in place against a "K" stencil.

First he sprinkled some talc over our carpet, worked it in and invited us to vaccy to our heart's content with our (inferior) machine. This we duly did with our $49 SANYO. After we were exhausted... he ran his Kirby over it many times and Behold! a black "K" on the cloth that was now white with powder ! Amazing....

So I asked if he had any more black clothes, took one and got the Mother-In-Law's old Hoover Lark upright, -the one she'd tossed on the verge recently...-the one my Child Bride had spent her youth using.... took the bag out and fitted the Black Cloth over the hole... vacuumed the SAME bit again... and picked up enough talc to turn the cloth, - wait for it, - White.

Never seen a salesman pack up and leave SO fast !

We now own a Dyson knock-off, a Hoover $700 thingy. Picks up pet hair nicely! Head is abit heavy and the suction pipe too shrt and not really all that flexible, but it works according to the blurb. Can't ask more than that.

Kirby all the way was the story for me, untill.... I found out about sebo, so I ended up getting the sebo x4. I know this is bloody boring discussion for most people!! but I like vacuums!

Reportedly, sebo are use in the Kremlin, Buckingham Palace and the White house.
