Carbon Tax. Well someone had to bring it up!

It's a TAX ..... How much more do you want to pay?

When government wanted companies and individuals to clean up their act, they introduced Policies and procedures (OHS, Licenses, accreditation, etc) ... The building industry already has the beginnings of policies in place that lead to more efficient products being purchased and built.



My opinion only,
What is being presented is the very thin edge of a very large wedge ... AND remember, This is a government that is in deadlock mode, and will be till the next election .... and on the next election, you will see the true voice of the Australian public.

The doom and gloom over the carbon tax is no different to that associated with every other change. Opportunities for those that are prepared to accept the change and make the most of it and extinction for all that still want to make buggy wheels and provide hay and stables because they don't want to accept change.

My examples of industries was to remind us that we have very little manufacturing base left in this country, and far from being irrelevant is rather important. We have missed the boat in being involved in sunrise industries developing because of the switch over to low carbon power generation and our remaining wealth generation from parts of the country, particularly in NSW and Qld is from exporting of coal and aluminium.

Introducing a carbon tax while our competitors don't have similar taxes only makes those places more attractive to manufacturers and hastens the transfer of those industries to other places. Caltex's comments about ceasing refining in Oz is an example of such a transfer.

One of the major roles of Government is to protect our national interests and introducing a tax that can only make our produce, manufactured goods and minerals more expensive when our competitors don't have them is not in our interest. What they should be doing is investing and subsidising a low carbon future, power generation, and laying the groundwork for the introduction of a carbon tax at the same time as our competitor nations introduce similar systems.

Remember we are too far from the rest of the World for tourism to save us, nor will food production and our minerals won't last forever, so our strategic interests must include our being competitive with the rest of the world and having something to sell them.

europe, uk, china, nz all have one or are well down the road to having one and some are more reaching than ours and going about it slightly differently but it is happening in more places than just here

i personally am undecided but favour it more than i dislike it as it "should" provoke a change in mindsets, hopefully to the degree it is starting too in nz, by all accounts..

We, and when I said we I refering to the people in Australia that have the money, are not interested in manufacturing or value add products. They are interested in having a warehouse and couple of forklifts and make easy money by importing products, they are interested in exploit our resources and send (export) in many cases to their parent companies and make money there and here by bring the end products to Australia.
It is so good for them that carbon tax or not as we debate in this thread invetors are trying to take over more Australian companies.

There is no denying climate change is a reality...

Any decent Geologist will tell you this...

Its been going on for Millions of years...

To think a financial tax is going to change anything in the worlds heating and cooling cycles is just bollocks.

I believe we should do things efficiently, and as cleanly as possible - thats just common sense... But there are some things which can not be done any cleaner or without other side effects...

Steel cannot be made without part of the process involving a blast furnace.

Power cannot be made without some form of stored energy and / or by product...

Coal & Atom create emissions.
Coal creates inert gas in large volumes - that nature *can* convert
Atomic creates products that nature will take eons to sort.

Wind / Wave create emissions during manufacture, installation, maintenance, repair...


This planet will warm up and will cool down.... Its the cycle of things...

Did we accelerate it? Perhaps... But historically were overdue for an Ice Age...

Less people = less carbon.

with the exception of China all those listed countries/union would fit into a single state of Australia, many of the individual nations would fit into Victoria and (excluding NZ) all have significantly more population than Australia with the result that the distances between population centres is significantly less. This population concentration means that the transport energy use per capita is less. France and UK also have nuclear power stations. Australia is the size of the continental US (lower 48) and has the population of London so our transport energy per capita is significantly more than Europe, UK or China and we are taxing transport at $24 ton.

This one factor will make every item in Australia more expensive without any benefits.
