Carbon Tax. Well someone had to bring it up!

Lets face it, with exception of ferrals and a few very conscientious principalled people most others think with their back pocket. A carbon price is simply a way to encourage people not to buy carbon intensive produced items or services and to encourage people to move away from carbon producing industries or methods in favour of lower carbon producing methods.

Yes there will be concequences, some intended and some not. I expect that we will adapt and adjust our ways as we will be less able to afford carbon heavy products and services.

Then again we could all be doomed and we will all be killed.

Indeed - the only way accountants and the general public will consider the environment systematically is when you put a price on it.

The same could be evidenced when fuel prices went up sharply a few years back - people started buying more fuel efficient cars and house prices in outer suburbs dropped dramatically.

Whats to stop businesses that have nothing to do with carbon emissions putting there prices up and blaming the Tax.

The ACCC is a toothless tiger, so wont do SFA, so if this happens we will all be alot more out of pocket than any predictions put up so far.

Am sure there is a far better way to implement this policy then an across the board tax.

Someone always has to pay. It will probably be our grand kids. It just depends on what sort of bill we leave them.

Nothing other than competitiveness with other companies. However collusion is something that occasionally can be proven - as the concrete companies found out a while back.

Just like when the GST came in - companies were allowed to make the same profit as before. So if a company previously calculated there prices as (Wholesale+WST (say 22%)) x 2 (100% markup), they were allowed to calculate their post GST prices as (Wholesale + previous markup) x 10%.

In reality many companies didn't drop prices...

I also love the tactic of the wreckers near me - they quote you a price (say $20), then when you come back after removing the part they say that will be $22 including GST.




Of course - there is always a better system - any government legislation (even if initially ideal) is modified repeatedly to get it passed into law - often detrimentally. However even an ideal system wouldn't please all of the people...


Incidentally, concrete production works out as about 1T of CO2 per 1T of concrete, so concrete prices shouldn't rise by more than $60/m3 (assuming concrete is not exempt).

For those members that are following the concerns of Abbott regarding the future of the carbon industry in Oz rest asured that the coalition do not are telling the truth, the Central Queensland's Member for Flynn Ken O'Dowd bought 10,000 shares in East Energy Resources, which has coal deposits in central Queensland's Galilee Basin. :D
Mr O'Dowd appeared with the shadow treasurer in Gladstone and Rockhampton this week to say a carbon tax would damage the coal industry. :angrylock:

There has also been the biggest coal take over bid in Australian history just occur. Coal is very secure.

Sounds like a big investment 10000 shares but they are 29cents each pay about $100 per year he cant trust them to much:) or maybe he hopes the coalition will "fix" anything the current govt breaks then the shares may be worth something;)

PS: it would be interesting to see who if any labour pollititions have invested in coal or steel lately do they believe its a good investment
