ROLLED DISCO 2 - feed back please

Well it turned to custard two weeks ago when my brother in law rolled our pride and joy, 2004 TD5 D2a.

We are looking for another but until it get assesed by the insurance we are not sure what position we shall be in.

We have explored the possibility of getting a replacement body shell and doing a body transfer but I dont have the facilities at home and then there is the finanical cost. I would like to do it but fear it would be a big job.

Until something like this happens one doesn't know what will happen. sure I knew about cages in the back but we didnt have one. Its secound on the shopping list now! (first item is a replacement)

We have also considered roll cages but cant decided between internal or external. I am leaning towards external because it will do the same as in internal (I think) but will preserve the general body shape better I think and generally make repairs easier - though I think I might be kidding my self there.

I am pretty gutted about it still, so is my wife too, these landys have a reputation and we feel that we had good one and now waiting to hear what will happen.

would appreciate any and all feed back on replacing the body shell and roll cages

    thanks all

    Hay Ewe

Hi mate. Sorry to hear about your loss - never a pleasant experience. Hope nobody was hurt in the rollover.

I think I'd also be looking aroud for a replacement, and then maybe seeing if you can buy the remains of yours from the insurance company for spares if it's worth it and you have the room to store it / strip it down.

As far as roll cages go - assume that the vehicle is road registered - in which case you'll never get an external cage approved in any case.

An internal roll bar or cage is purely for the protection of the occupants, and certainly not to limit body damage in the event of a rollover - so you'll need to make your decision on that basis. In my opinion, unless I was into serious off-roading or competition stuff, I wouldn't bother.
    Cheers .........

I would be worried about possible engine damage from it running while it was laying on its side or roof. Bearings don't like not having constant oil pressure even when the engine is only idling.

While it might start and run ok now, if it was running for a decent amount of time with no oil pressure you could find after spending heaps of time and money rebuilding it that within a 100 ks of getting it back on the road that it has a major failure.

I'd ask your brother in law how long the engine was running after he rolled it.

    cheers,
    Terry

in qld you dont even need to get a mod plate for an external roll cage so long as you make it out of no larger than 2" tube, it doesnt foul the doors from opening or block any lights and it has to be painted matt black to prevent any glare to the driver.

Never knew that mate - always thought that exo cages were illegal on road registered vehicles everywhere.

But even so - I don't reckon it would be an easy job designing / fitting one to a Disco, and it would look butt-ugly.

Reminds me of years ago up at Mount Magnet - one of the blokes at work rolled his near new Ford Cortina on the Sandstone Road. A couple of months later, he got it back from the panel beaters, had it for about a week, and then rolled it again in almost the same location.

Next time he got it back from the panel beaters, we got to it on night shift. It had a decent roof rack fitted, so we knocked off four wheels from two "wheelie bins" and fitted one to each corner of the roof rack as "trainer wheels".

    He wasn't impressed.

Another option to get away with it is to call it a roof rack, as long as it's bolted not welded(visibly ) to the chassis you can call it a roof rack. One I saw was welded then had a diamond shaped plate with 2 boltholes that was then bolted to chassis to conceal weld, it was then welded to tube and looked like a bolt on job.

    Hay all

    thanks for the reply

we al got out of it well and walked away from it
I was actually a passenger in it, really unusual because if I or my wife are in it then we drive, why on this time I didnt I dont know, just one of those things.

the engine didn't run on its side, I am sure that we were coming to a rest and I was already calling "Ignition Off!, Ignition Off! and from the passenger seat I turned it off.

As for a roll cage, yes, I think we are over reacting a bit but we always review what happened and could be done to remove or reduce the risk / improve the result whether it be cycling, on the motobike or camping or other taskings.

    thanks

Quick thinking Hay Ewe, at least now you know the engine should still be good.

Glad to hear no one was injured

Hi, The engine will not run if rolled, the inertia safety switch on the bulkhead in front of the passenger foot well trips and cuts the fuel. It will need re setting to start the engine
