Geez, bad luck on that. . As you have mentioned, and a bit late now, you should always do your homework before handing over your hard earned...

Not sure what you can do now, but break it down for parts.... Maybe someone else may have some other ideas, but I doubt you will ever be able to get hold of the bastards that took your money....

I think if it's a non-repairable write-off it has to be advertised as such, and if it wasn't it might be worth contacting Ebay or RTA.

    Mate,

Was is advertised as a non repairable writeoff? If not, you're the victim of fraud and should contact the police. The police have appropriate means to deal with such situations. To sell an item on eBay a user must register themselves and adequately identify themselves to either eBay or Paypal. Contact PAL (Police Assistance Line) and let them know of the situation. From memory internet fraud (in any state) is handled by the Queensland Police Force though I'm sure your local Police Force will assist you given the value of the goods.

How did you pay for the item? Paypal insures you with purchases. I'm not sure if reporting the fraud to the police will get you any of your money back (Actually I'm quite sure it wont).

Another alternative would be to part it out (I know it makes you cringe, but it might be the only way).

May I ask - what exactly is wrong? Just wont drive - run?

If its been writen off by an insurance company and there is no damage that you can see it may have been dunked in water some time Car can look nice even drive ok but may be big trouble down the track with rust and electrical problems if they didnt tell you when you bought it they should be made to pay, let the police know what happened. Dont think there is much can be done to remove the write off status so parting out may be your only option.

The only other option is to buy a reapairable write off and transfer the good bits over and sell of the spares. Or if your a bit more creative buy an old series 3(for a def) or RRC/D1(for a disco 2) and do a DRIVETRAIN and cabin rebuild

Sorry guys but what have the police got to do with it - sorry to say it is buyer beware - it was sold un reg and no rwc. I don't think for private sellers there is any legal obligation to disclose such things - if asked maybe different. The ethics of the sale are a worry though.

In NSW it cannot be put back on the road but maybe Ok in other states but I do not know.

I feel the buyers pain on this and highlights due diligence checks are required before buying anything.

Seeing as it was a private sale, did you do a REVS check? A REVS check
protects you from buying previously written off or encumbered vehicles, as for $5.00 they will guarantee the information is correct.

Sorry, but if it has been deemed a stat write-off in NSW, it cannot be re-registered in and other state. When Insurance companies write off a vehicle, they add in an orange sticker to the vehicle informing this.
