" A shed, a shed, my kingdom for a SHED" :(
Making sure you have taken up as much room as possible in your shed,
Like I said, I used to use mine as a big bench and really handy for lifting things off the ground to put in the back of a ute like a loading dock.
I had to have one for the 3 wheeled machines I was working on as they are difficult to pick up safely with a 2 post but I shall make an adapter frame to be able to pick them up if I end up doing that again and stick with a 2 post this time myself.
I suppose it was handy having a 5 meter long bench when your doing brakes and wheel bearings but a rolling bench does the same job.
The are quick and easy for a retail workshop for doing certain jobs but for a private shed I don't think a 4 post is all that good.
Cheers Casper
What about an inspection pit instead of a hoist?
Cheaper to do, no power consumption unless you fit it with a light inside, build it yourself in a couple of weekends and takes up no space (cover it with decent timber so you can drive over it. Just as versatile as a hoist plus somewhere to store your tools when you aren't working on the landrover (so your pit will always be empty!)
Had a pit at the old boys since I was a kid, very handy, but once the 2 poster went on it's seldom used, mainly for engineconversions as it allows access over and under which is very useful for dummying up
for goodness sake dont apply for council approval for a pit!
they want way too much done!
*- specs on strength of sides (not just normal stuff want engineers report to
be sure it wont fracture etc!)
*- sumps in base with auto sump pump fitted that pumps to self contained tank as may contain chemicals / oils etc
*- exhaust fans, movement activated and piping for same from two heights to outside where 2nd fan (if more than @12 ft - 4mtrs) also activates
*- contained and sealed lighting fitted
*- solid plate (sections) covers (grill not acceptable, nor hardwood!)
*- all concrete must be sealed in pit to prevent leakage
I can see why certain things are wanted but building such a pit will cost a lot more than a hoist!
I wonder how many "bodgy" pits are springing up....well down, around the place.
Cheers

Hi
I am a little clearer now of what I want so thanks for the input, I thought about a pit for about 5 seconds and dismissed it. I work in an industry where you would need a harness a standby man and a gas detector to go in it so you get my drift
I am looking also for a clear floor version as none of my projects drive at the moment and I currently push them in and out the less bumps I have to push over the better
Thanks again
