Have to agree with just about everything said landy will be much better off road and alot stronger underneath.( have broken a cruiser chassis myself). If he is thinking of going back as far as 85 model id forget defender and find a good isuzu county.
Defenders are great trucks but landrover hasnt had a good diesel since the isuzu.

WHAT???? the td5 isnt a good diesel? its brilliant, thats what it is.

I've owned a troopy,hilux,ser3 landy ser2A AND ....td5 DISCO....GIVE ME THE DISCO ANYDAY TO GO JUST ABOUT ANYWHERE....The troopy was dangerous out bush great to carry gear but not a patch on the hilux but the DISCO is great.:D

So can you rate each of those by capability, I assume you've had them all out.

I must agree with Jaffa on this one been there done that ,
I have 98 tdi which at 220k blow the con rod out the side of the block
at 200k rattled the head loose and sheared head bolt i could go on but the problems are now fixed .
Pulled the tdi out and replaced it with a 3.9 v8.
As for the td5 they go great when going but a healthy back account is needed if a head cracks or the bolt falls out of the oil pickup.
If you are looking for good advice take on board both the good and bad.
