    The best 4x4 x far?

Went on a trip with my brother and some of his mates to Wyperfeld over the weekend. My brother's '85 troopy camper as well as 97 V8 Disco and a '00 Hilux came along. For those unfamiliar with the area it's not the best spot to test vehicles mostly flat country, sandy with a few dunes and the occasional mud puddle. Despite a bit of "will the disco make it" it had no trouble keeping up even with its road tyres and probably out performed on occasion.

And the scenery? Well it's beautiful country and definitely worth a look but now to my question.

My brother has just bought this vehicle and after the trip has realised that it's not really what he wants and is already thinking about getting another troopy and decking it out how he wants.

The main issue he has with it is the limiting factor of the professionally done camper setup. Now it seems he is completely sold on a Troopy already despite my best efforts. Reliability is a big issue and it doesn't help that I'm constantly fixing my SIII.

So what advantages does a Defender have over a Troopy? And which is the better 4wd? He would be looking for a vehicle in the 85 to 95 year range. Having only driven SIII and now a discovery from the Land Rover range he doesn't see me as the most qualified person to advocate for Defenders.

    Biassed and unbiased replies welcome.

    110 pros, cons

    1. The defenders ride very well for the age/ type of vehicle.

2.They are considerably more capable, in general, than the leaf sprung rovers.

    3. The chassis resembles a railway bridge...honestly get under and have a look at one there is no chassis on the market that comes even close to my knowledge.

    4. Disc brakes all round, think this was after 94??

    5. Wheel travel is also one of the best stock out there. And plenty more to be had with mild mods, just dont go sky high.

    6. 33inch tyres with no mods.

    7. Low, low range with factory, no mods.

    8. Nice power steering.

Cons, seating position, very upright, and u have to have one elbow out the window to be comfortable. The hand brake is arkward for your left leg. The interior is sparse and hose out. All these cons could be pros if its what you want, the only one I still consider a con is the handbrake location.

Theres plenty more that could be said, but thats a start.

I was on the lookout for a Troopy for several years before I settled on the P38.

I just couldn't justify the relatively high prices for fit/finish/roughness equivalent to a HiAce bus I bought as a family vehicle (3 kids/dogs/bicycles/camping stuff etc) back in 1980. As late as 2003 Troopies even had the same heater/controls as the 1980 HiAce

Further, their general dynamic stability leaves a lot to be desired...

Some people luv'em: frankly I think they are great mine / farm vehicles.

were I to look for another vehicle I go for a Deefer....

    Let the prejudices flow...

Well suspension wise the defender has coils all round increasing comfort and as we all know these land rover suspension setups are unrivaled in the 4wding world with their superior suspension geometry. Also the centre diff lock will allow greater traction between the front and rear axis, i don't think troopies have this, could be wrong though.

The troopy is not constant 4wd thus it doesn't have a centre diff. Putting it in 4wd locks the front and rear diffs together.

    Don't know about Troopies.

But my Defender (2010 Puma) is awesome off road compaired to my old Toyota 4 Runner. I am yet to give the Puma a challenge it can not tackle with ease!

My Puma is straight out of the box. No modifications neccssary. The only thing I want to change on my Puma is the standard tyres, to All Terrain.

A Defender 110 can have the rear seat removed and two door access to either side of the rear, a troopy can't. A 130 can have the same, but with a tray on the back where as a troopy has rear barn doors and that's it.
A 130 can potentially carry 205lt with sill tanks, or even 280lt if you replace the original tank as well. 110's are not far behind.
A defender can also stow 140lt of water easily.
Tow 3000kg if needed. Doesn't need a suspension upgrade, and has a huge accessory aftermarket sector. I guess Toyos have plenty of accessories.

Both are are sparse on mod cons, both have similar seating positions, both leak dust IMO.
A troopy has a high roof line, so to carry anything up top has a very high centre of gravity.

A Defer has sole, and a big family with soul.

Appearances are deceptive. Railway bridges aren't built from such thin steel (2mm)nor is any other brand of 4wd chassis that I can think of.
Landy chassis these days are not as well protected against corrosion as some of the earlier models either. They are regarded as consumables in the Uk and other damp environs.

I've welded up quite a few cruiser and patrol chassis and they are very thin steel sheet but worst of all the welds on them are bird poo, better than half didn't have the weld fillet even on the joint and again better than half didn't have the fillet actually joining the metal.I've never seen a 110 chassis cracked in half but the other two I've seen heaps, the last job I ever did in Kalgoorlie was welding a troopy back together. I have never had to do that. A lot of people don't need to do that.

My leg never touches the handbrake. Some other people don't have that problem either.

Not everyone has a problem with those things.
