Who built the mystery road and why
I drove up the Black Mountain road/track from Kuranda to Mossman a couple of days ago.
It is Nissan Micra to the Mystery road then vaguely 4Wd from there through the Mowbray national park, as there are lots of berms.
My question is who lives around Cairns and knows the history of the quite fine bitumin Rd the starts near Mt Moffat and runs east cutting the Black Mountain Road and has substantial gates stopping anyone from black Mountain track to run east on it?
It seems quite bizarre as it is maybe 20-40 years old and has double lines down the middle and is in good condition where the track crosses it. it is listed on the HEMA map as "private road no access"
It would have cost millions of $

The road is about halfway between Cairns and Mossman, so is not in the Starke area . It is not in Bloomfield or near Cape flattery.
Apologies is there is mention later in the document as I only read to page 16 or so.

Yeah, Quaid road. it starts on the coast just before the Rex Lookout and jsut after Hartleys croc farm.
it was pusehd through by Quaid (dont know first name) who apprantly got aproval from Joh Bleke-petterson but soon after completion it the government changed (before my time) and its not approved.
This Quaid bloke was goign to build a houseing development inland some where near MT Molly, but that never happened. He also built a dam / lake that is pretty large but shallow.
The road was intended to service the houseing development. Its pretty steep in places and narrow too. I doubt it would meet the standards of the time (late 80's early 90's) and am quite sure it wouldnt now. A reputable source told me it woudl take around $50 million to make it meet the standards.
There are gates at the bottom, locked, though the trailbike riders get around them, and at the top too about 1km east of where it intersects with Black Mountain road.
the land on both sides is national park (or is it state park) but Quaid hasnt let the road go, holding on to it for his pension?
I havent been much further along it in a westward direction from the Black Mountain Road and dont actually know where it comes out, I bet google earth would tell you though.
