    Mining Work HELP!!!!!

    Gents,

For varying circumstances I need to move on with my life! And location!
Also family wise we really need to be looking to move to the East Coast.. Rockhamptonish...

I have been trying to get into 'Mining' for the last 6 months now...
I have an extensively mixed bag of work qualifications but I am looking towards the Field Exploration Assistant / Field Technician / Dump truck Operator / Port Ops direction ..... BUT for love nor money I can't seem to get anywhere....

Is there anyone who could point me in the right direction..... As all I hear is we need qualified people and there is a shortage.... But no one seems to be developing people into those roles, they seem to want to pay more and steal from another company!

Any help would be very much appreciated!!!

    James

yes James youre dead right. No one is developing anybody to these roles. The agencies are only in it for the money and do nothing to assist you. They request...no demand that you have everything in their favour to put you in front of their client. You need in almost all applications to have mining/coal board generic inductions, a number of clearances called BMA and other names I forget, work at heights, confined spaces, forklift and often HR licenses. Police clearances are sometimes required. These are all at your expense and cost a considerable sum to obtain them. Nevertheless there are organisations that will take you through all the necessaties to enable you to meet all mining application requirements.....again at a considerable cost....not including time and being generally ****ed around by these people. They appear to be an incarnation of car and real estate sales persons. Good luck James, I have been following the same process.

    James,
My advice is to keep trying and annoying people. Your best bet initially is to try and find a preferred contractor who operate where you want to work and get a job with them and then maybe shift across to a company job. The sad thing at the moment is a lot of companies are only contracting work out now. Check companies like skilled.
I hear what you are saying and companies are screaming for good trained people but do not want to put in much effort to training green people.
In the areas you are looking at I would say look at coal, even look at QR rail and companies like that that haul coal.
Even with mining experience once you are out it can be very hard to get back in.
    Good luck.

I know the feeling, I have been trying on and off for years now and have finally learnt a few things.

First you need to decide whether you want to surface or underground. Trainee underground miners are advertised more frequently then truck drivers.

The actual mines rarely if ever hire inexperienced people and a lot of their work is undertaken by contractors. The idea is that you start with a contractor and if you are a good worker the mine will make you an offer to become permanent staff.

Finding companies that are willing to pay for you to do inductions and courses is hard. Be prepared to start in a labouring role and impress the hell out of the boss and they might put you through machinery training which is where the big $$$ are.

The roles in most demand and making the biggest $$$ are those in safety and training. A mate of mine is scoring $1200 a day just to do first aid courses.

Religiously monitor seek for job ads, keep an eye on the mining company sites but the ones to really target are the likes of Thiess, Goldings, John Holland and Leightons. These companies are all active on CQ coal mines and some of them are soley responsible for mine operations on selected sites.

get onto a mob called workpac, they do all the skilled/unskilled labour hire for the dawson basin and more.

i got an email from a mate who works in the mines, the are currently hiring unskilled operators, no GI's or RII's req but they will look favourably if you have them. mob call iminco is legit supplier of these tickets, just dont get sucked in by mining-australia, hogans or any recruiter that asks you to pay a fee upfront. Even if they look legit, just google them + scam.

ill email you the add on monday, ive put my name down for the moura mine, 2hrs from rocky.

True in a lot of cases but most employers I dealt with living in a mining town will put you through these at their cost if they feel you are worth the investment and they want to hire you. It seemed to be mostly the contractors and smaller companies who expect you to come "fully ticketed". I worked for a company for less than 3 months and got all my coal competencies free of charge through them, then moved on.

Thanks gent for taking time to respond. I will give those companies stated a ring today. Tried to the Gladstone side first but gave up there after going round in circles!

Thanks again... Seems the lottery offers better odds!
