Water/Fuel Tanks

Hey All,

I'm travelling across the Simpson in a few weeks in my 200Tdi and was wondering how much extra fuel I should carry and how much water I should carry.

I was planning on carrying the water in Jerrys but does anyone have a nice tank they'd like to let go :P

I have carried (extra) water in the 10 litre bladders that come in a cardboard box, and that you can buy from supermarkets. When they are empty just burn them or crush them up to increase the available room. Not suggesting that this is the way to carry water all the time, just those times when you need extra. Use the boxed water first, then switch to your usual jerry cans or what ever.

Fuel wise, your consumption will probably increase by about 20% in the sand. You may do better than that but it is a good starting point. Avoid carrying fuel and/or water on a roof rack.

It might be helpful is you let us know

- what route you were planning on taking?
- how long were you planning for the crossing?
- how many people in the vehicle or how heavily laden will you be?

I just spoke to a friend today who was out there in the last few weeks - he said that Eyre Ck (bypass track) is now open and that there are not a lot of travellers out there at present - he only saw one other on the run from Dalhousie to Poepells then Hay River track to Jervois.

Fuel I had 120 in the main tank and 2 x 20l Jerry cans on the roof........used 80l going via rig road

Water 72l in one tank and a 20l Jerry on the roof lasted the whole trip

Your roof can hold plenty as I also had a complete spare, 2 x gas cylinders, 3 x swags, solar panel, awaning, shovel, tarp.....I'm sure there were a few other things

2 x adults
1 x child

I carried everything I needed for 16-18 days including 6 x 30 packs of beer, 2 x fridges

It worked for me

I've got nothing more than my 80l tank at the moment and my trip is in 3 weeks. I'm still awaiting my itinerary. Going to need to source some Jerrys methinks. :/

While carrying spare fuel is a very good idea,, the 200Tdi should only use around 60 litres to get to Dalhousie,,

In the 300Tdi with 2 others on board, East to West, QAA and French line, sand a bit softer than the norm and towed a Land Cruiser from East of Purni Bore to Mt Dare, empied the standard tank just prior to Mt Dare. 2002 trip.

You really need to know your route, we went from Coober Peedy up to Mt Dare then across to Poepells Cnr and up the Hay river track at the beginning of July.
Disco 3 1050 KM travelled between fuel stops ( Mt Dare and Jervois) Used about 150 Litres including an afternoon of serious play on a sand dune near the Poeppel oil well.
From the trip computer average speed about 23KM/H, Average Fuel about 14.5 LT/100KM

I have 180 Litres of fuel capacity and we carried a hard tank across the back floor with 40 litres and a 20 lt Jerrycan of tank water that we kept for drinking once we emptied the 12 1.5 lt bottles of spring water we stashed throughout the vehicle.
We ended up with about 20 Lt in the floor tank and about half a Jerrycan of water.
Two adults , two kids. Lots of washing ourselves with baby wipes

I'm happy to lend you the hard tank I bought but you would need to pick it up from Yass/Canberra. PM Me if required.
