I feel for you. Your biggest problem is the competition. We recently advertised for a graduate mech or elec engineer; got 120+ resumes; many with a master's, interviewed 4, rejected 3 as they new nothing about us or our industry (and obviously had made no effort to do so), hired one.

My advice is not to do a one size fits all resume and letter. I know it's a lot of work but do your research on the company and industry, and make sure that is shown early on in your letter.

You can't do anything about your resume as you have no experience but you can show you've gone to some effort to understand the role/industry you're applying for.

Oh..and make sure you state loud and clear that you are a resident of Australia and have the right to work in Australia. There's so many resumes come through from OS or people here on student visas it becomes a chore to sort them out.

Just to emphasise that - we're doing a lot of recruitment at the moment (almost permanently, it seems, but different industry) and one of the questions I always ask is what they know about us and our industry. If they haven't even bothered to check out our website, they're not the type of person we want as it says a lot about the effort they're likely to put it if we did employ them....

Oh, and make at least the covering letter specific to the company you're applying to.

mate that would be great, I will send you a PM.

I have applied for one BHP position, but got rejected. I just feel like my resume has something missing, but you just have to be persistant with these things.

Try Anglo American, they are always after graduates.

just be persistent, dont give up, it took my mate 18months to find a position, finally got hired by BHP, then got laid off before he even started, eventually got a job with Anglo, totally loving it and just bought his first house at 25.
