Sorry - we are not one nation. We are 6 countries (NZ was intended to be the 7th) joined by a Federation agreement. The most obvious demonstration of this is a Queens representative for the Commonwealth and individual representatives for the states - they are at the same pecking order - the GG cannot boss around a Governor.

Any state can elect to leave the Commonwealth subject to an appropriate resolution getting up and being passed by the people in the Commonwealth through a referendum (pigs might fly too) - a similar process would be needed to abolish the states and create One Nation that was not a federation (do you see more piggies flying?.

Sure over the years the states have traded away their powers and more to come so that one day we will be one nation in practice but not in name - it is only then do I believe any referendum to do away with the states would get up.

I bought the Defender from Qld, had Blknight do the inspection for me, checked REVS and WOVR etc and I STILL had troubles getting it transferred into NSW rego.

It passed blue slip no worries and I went to the RTA...





...and do you think I could get the screws out to hand in the QLD plates? NO! :mad:

This thread has drifted but started with an example of unnecessary doubling up of work. We could also look at Health, Education, Transport and plenty more. This means extra cost with a negative impact on productive. For what result? So I can have number plates with a little VIC and you get an ACT. We both expect, and are usually delivered a similar level of service for our rego fees.

How we got to where we are doesn't, IMHO, dictate where we should head.

Look at the USA example, colonies (some of them foreign owned) joined to form a Nation. They recognised, early, the need for a stronger Federal government and quickly diluted the state governments. (Ok lets not dwell too long on USA, because they arent really the role model nation at the moment!!)

Just drives me crazy how much money we waste duplicating processes and retarding productivity. How long did we have 3 different rail gauges?

Why are trucks able to have interstate rego?

Being difficult to acheive does not mean it shouldn't be done.

Of course we do not need to go the one nation route - all we need is to get the governments to agree on a bunch of common issues and all done.

Actually when i was working a guy had a battery operated piggy with wings that flew - he would switch it on when ever a client came and asked a question and he gave his answer - yes he was a public servant.:)

This may have been my RRC. However I was able to buy it back and re-register it because it was more than 15 years old and therefore the (economical) write-off would not get to the register. As the rego had expired, the insurance company didn't cancel the rego so I just had the usual annual inspection done and paid the rego renewal. As it happens, its now out of rego because it doesn't get used and needs to find a new home.

How about local police forces, laws against interstate banks, different pollution laws by state eg California emissions, and so on infinitum.
Australia's constitution was modelled on the USA largely as far as state and federal powers are concerned. they are far worse than us.

In this case the WOVR is a display only register with no facility to be amended or have notes attached to particular entries. As a programmer I find it incredible that a system like this could have been developed. If notes could be attached then all this could have been avoided. I should mention that virtually everyone I spoke to was sympathetic - just that their hands were tied.
As far as us becoming one nation well, to be truthful, I think it is more likely that we will split into separate countries rather than meld into one.
The way decisions in Canberra can get swayed by trendoid lefties from the inner suburbs of Sydney and Melbourne (as is currently the case) means that states like WA and QLD get quite justifiably peeved and will, in my opinion, just abandon the Commonwealth.
Forget constitutions etc and the need for a referendum - they will simply say "bugger this - we're out and we dont care what you lot think". What could Canberra do? Send in the troops, arrest the premier, get water canons on the street - I dont think so.

We could call it an AUS roadworthy check....then I could have number plates that have a little "AUS" at the top. Just an idea, not worth calling the Army out over though.;)

A system that's been spec'd and approved by people who don't have any idea of the real world requirement to be able to modify or reverse any action.
