Sorry - we are not one nation. We are 6 countries (NZ was intended to be the 7th) joined by a Federation agreement. The most obvious demonstration of this is a Queens representative for the Commonwealth and individual representatives for the states - they are at the same pecking order - the GG cannot boss around a Governor.
Any state can elect to leave the Commonwealth subject to an appropriate resolution getting up and being passed by the people in the Commonwealth through a referendum (pigs might fly too) - a similar process would be needed to abolish the states and create One Nation that was not a federation (do you see more piggies flying?.
Sure over the years the states have traded away their powers and more to come so that one day we will be one nation in practice but not in name - it is only then do I believe any referendum to do away with the states would get up.
