Buying an interstate Vehicle - cautionary tale

The biggest problem with buying vehicles from interstate is not so much the NSW RTA but the fact that people interstate don't seem to want sell registered vehicles. I purchased a three month old camper trailer last year from a fella in Qld who wouldn't sell it registered, at first I thought he just wanted the refund from the plates so I offered to reimburse him for the rego and he still wouldn't sell it with rego or give me the rego papers.

So in the end he towed it from Brisbane to Nambucca Heads took the plates off and then I had to root around and get it weighed, blue slipped 3 times (the bloke couldn't read the chassie # properly) before I could tow it home. I don't know what the big deal is about selling a registered vehicle interstate but apparently it is.

That is so true Chunk. I was trying to buy a car from a Qld dealer and all he wanted to do was derigister it and send it down on a truck unregistered. Then I have the problem of driving it for re-inspection/registration etc and I live 100 kays from the nearest Vic RTA.

And the hassles from QLD RTA and Vic RTA I encountered don't bear talking about.

Not for me - I'll stick to Victorian cars.

I insured my written off repaired discovery third property insurance only cause I reckon in a accident "market value" would be bugger all if they looked up its history

My experience with Vic (maybe same applies to QLD) vehicles cannot be sold registered unless they have a valid roadworthy certificate. My recent purchases in the Vic (RRS and Camper) in both cases the plates were removed and sold unregistered (not such an issue in Vic as it was easy to obtain cheap drive certificates to bring them back to the ACT. In the ACT and NSW not such an issue as a roadworthy in not required for a registered vehicle sale. The roadworthy is needed to complete the registration transfer and you have up to 2 weeks for this.

I had the joy of dealing with some of these systems, including demerit points database and WOVS up until a few years ago, I moved to another IT support area in DTEI and thankfully don't hear of these systems much anymore....

Well I finally got the new plates for the old girl - but not without another hassle. THis time it was nothing to do with policy - it was due to a blackout and the fact that the RTA branch in Armidale couldnt therefore process electronic payments. Fair dinkum I was starting to believe that it was written in the stars that she should never be registered.
I feel a bit sorry for the bloke in the registry that was dealing with me. I guess I got a bit unpleasant towards him. I know he doesnt make policy but he is representing the people that do and I guess I felt, at the time, that it was reasonable to show my totally fed up and frustrated attitude. The thing that really got up my nose is that you have to pay for a basic set of plates (not personalised or anything special - just a set of basic set of black and yellow plates). IMO plates are a basic part of rego and should be included in the rego charge.
When he said that the plates were $39 extra I stated that I would have thought they were included in the rego charge. He said no so I said in that case I'll just have the rego and the stamp duty thanks - you can keep the plates. Of course he looked at me like I was an idiot and stated I had to have plates (which of course I know) but I then pointed out that if they were compulsory why arent they included in the rego charge. I then asked if there were any other charges he wanted to lump in with the rego "use of pen and paper charge perhaps".
Look, I was cranky and frustrated - that's my only excuse.
Anyway got home, put the new plates on and went for a drive through some mud and a large puddle - it felt great.

My wife purchased a charade van when we lived in sydney.she was unable to get insurance to buy it on finance so we scraped up the cash.
it was thirdparty insured but nobody would allow theft in policy.
the car was listed as hail damaged-the insurance company had replaced the bolt on bonet and repainted the car-silver metalic.what on earth could class that as a pernament damaged car.

as a comercial vehicle the sydney rego was atronomical.but once she was talked into transfering to my address the rego droped to almost primary production prices.

And in Qld, if your car is registered but is a heap, and you plan to sell it unregistered, you have to cancel the rego before it can even be offered for sale. You can be fined over $500 even if you specify that it will be unregistered and without RWC. Ridiculous really. Means if you want to sell your old car before buying another one you are without a car, or you have to take your chances. But the cops frequently patrol the places along the roadsides where people park used cars, and no roadworthy on display in the car equals instant fine.

Dead right. In Qld. any registered vehicle offered for sale has to have a Safety Certificate with the blue paper displayed on the vehicle. Not to do so is an offence and attracts a fine.

Add to this, in Brisbane City Council's area, that you can be fined for parking a vehicle on a public road so as to offer it for sale. The nice council man will inform Qld. Transport if it is a registered vehicle without a displayed Safety Certificate. If the vehicle is unregistered then the nice council man will issue another fine for parking an unregistered vehicle on the public road.
