    TD 5 airfilter housing

I,m in the sort of situation of closing the barn door after the horse has bolted.....I own a Discovery 2, 2000 TD 5 GS and have 297,000 km on the odo, all services and repairs are done by myself and each time I replace the airfilter my hair stands on end....most proberly the most useless airfilter housing ever designed, always a fine film of dust and other debris in the lid of the housing !!!!

I am in the mining business and visit our granite quarries every week, the dust resembles talcum powder, how on earth did the idiots at Solihull get away with this, one of the most capable 4x4,s, yet it is possible to destroy the motor due to the flimsy airfilter housing, stupid plastic clips holding the cover down and after some time the lip on the cover cracks and no pressure is exerted by the clip.

Landrover, please tell us whether the Disco 2 ( 4x4, low range, CDL, coil suspension, ABS, HDC) was designed for the quaint UK country roads or for Africa / Australia because if it was designed to be used in the rough you got it all wrong !!!

Actually, after blowing off a bit of steam, my question to my Australian friends, do you know of anyone who has had a aluminium / other housing manufactured which fits in the Disco 2,s engine bay without the need for major modifications, maybe the Donaldson sort of setup ????

hmm watching this.i have a v8 and am worried about the same thing.fitting a snorkel will allow the air to be picked up at a higher spot reducing dust intake however the filter should still work.

never had a probem with the one on the deefer, if you dont seat the filter just right it will deforem, the easiest way of checking is with a little bearing blue, if yovue got a warp in the casing (and Ive seen a few that do) the best way of sealing it up is to smear a little rubber grease onto the lip of the filter.

Direct aluminium replacements are available for Defenders, but not cheap.

    Not sure about Discos.

I'd probably just buy a new original box to last another 10 years to go along with the snorkel and Donaldson pre-cleaner that I had. A snorkel was a LR accessory.

Are you sure it's from the air box?
When I first joined there was a discusion about the "0" ring on the Air Flow Meter allowing dust through to the post air filter side of things.
People where applying grease in the hope to trap the dust while trying to give a better seal.

I've not had a problem, but only look at it at service time.
Most of the dust over my way is from other rigs.
I've found I tend to be trip leader so I'm infront of the dust, so it's not an issue for me
    Cheers, Kyle

Yes, it could include the "O" ring, dust on the micro gauze which is after the "O" ring, thought there would be 100's with same problem but maybe I'm the exception !

Yes, I have had dust in the lid of mine as well. Then I pulled out the entire air box and striped the "ducks bill" rubber gromet from the bottom of the airbox and it was blocked solid with solidified dirt and debris. Since doing this the lid has remained dust free.
