    MAF Clean

After reading a few posts about rough running I decided to clean the MAF to see if it would help with some issues I have been having. It has never been done to my knowledge and with the car (Disco 1 3.9 V8) nearly having 300k on the clock it certainly can't hurt anyway. The trouble is, on all the posts I have read they mention the two wires that need to be cleaned. When I pulled the MAF off yesterday all I could find was a stainless(?) wire gauze at the air filter end and obviously the plug was connected as per normal at the top, but nothing else I could describe.
Could somebody please post a pic of what their healthy MAF looks like as I am a neanderthal as far as posting pics goes. This way I could compare what mine looks like. I have a Haynes manual with the Disco but the pic in the book doesn't show the internals.
Would appreciate any help or information.

G'day,Brett, I've just cleaned mine, and it made a difference. If you remove the MAF completely, look in thru either end you will see the element hanging down, about in the middle.I used CRC mass air flow sensor cleaner, got mine from repco., supposed to clean @ protect mass air flow sensors. I also cleaned my ambient air pressure sensor, and manifold absolute pressure [MAP] sensor. I think it is advisable to clean the power to the MAF switch as well, [you take it off to remove the MAF anyway]using the MAF cleaner on all.The MAP gets pretty dirty. BTW,it is recommended you do not touch the MAF sensor at all , and general opinion is do the clean when the sensor is cold. If you dont have a RAVE DVD, may I suggest buying one, it makes so many things clearer. I have the routine of cleaning all these items every oil change.[I also clean the coolant temp. sensor, mine gets oily after a while.] Cheers, Bob

[oops, just noticed you have a V8, mine is a TD5, just looked in RAVE, appears the MAF is the same principle for both,so at least that advice should be ok]

    Thanks Bob,

I did the clean with CRC as you suggested, and I did remove the whole unit but I just couldn't see any sensor or wires in there. Maybe I am just not looking in the right place. I did clean out the connector plug as well as I figured that cleaning all the electrical parts wouldn't hurt anyway and it does seem to be running better so something worked.

Does the RAVE cd cover v8's as well or is it only td5 specific. If it does, where can I get one?

Brett, the sensor wires are not in the main throat of the 5AM maf. If you look carefully, you will see a little channel on the right side of the maf, there would be platinum wires, the hole is only about 8mm diameter.Rover 14CUX Hot Wire Mass Flow EFI: Service and Troubleshooting.
look at this link, and scroll down to bottom of page - Sensors, it'll show you the wires, you may have to pull one section of the body apart.

Go to the top of the thread page, click on " shop" , I have RAVE 2, it covers the V8. Cheers, Bob.

Looking from the airfilter side, top left corner, spray plenty in hole and let dry, Regards Frank.

    Hey guys,
I was wondering if this may fix my problem (unless its may imagination?)

My disco 2 V8 runs well and has good fuel economy by the sound of it, smooth idle, easy starting etc, but unless it is my imagination I feel the following-

Under acceleration while gradually flooring the loud pedal the old girl gets up and and goes quite well. Good launch of the line, revs cleanly and power seems to build nicely till redline.

If I just jump on the accelerator and push it to the floor, it seems to take a noticeably longer amount of time to rev out. Feels slower of the line, has a slight dip at around 3500rpm, then frees up and gets going again.

I think the top end revs are fine using either method, but once floored it really seems to be something not right in the bottom to mid range.

Engines done 155000klms, only run 98ron fuel.
All plugs, leads and one of the coil packs were replaced a few months back after one coil pack died (was running rough as buggery).

I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue and what's required to fix it?

    regards
    Darian
