Sad loss of ABC staff in chopper crash

A black day for the ABC with the loss of 3 long serving staff in a chopper crash at Lake Eyre.Reporter Paul Lockyer, Cameraman John Bean and pilot Gary Ticehurst. Each was an exceptional person in their profession. Gary can probably be best remembered for his participation as chopper pilot in the Bush Tucker Man series with Les Hiddins when he was an army pilot and then again with the disastrous Sydney to Hobart race a few years ago.
Vale to 3 fine people and sincere sympathy to their families.
    Cheers......Brian

Yes, this is very sad news. Especially terrible when so many years of flying experience can not prevent an accident such as this.

Well said. Very sad event, and a bit puzzling as well. And likely to be a difficult investigation.

    Unhappy Three gentlemen gone.

I was aware of Paul's work very early on in his career. Always a well rounded out report.

John's reputation spread out from Brisbane to other ABC sites, deservedly so. I worked/met with his wife Pip a few times. She would have picked a real winner in John.

Met with Gary face-to-face a couple of times. On other occaisions I liased with him setting up chopper camera shots and general chopper work. He could make the chopper an integral part of the camera, not just transport for it. Nothing was too hard. He often came up with results that we had not dreamt of.

All three will be very sadly missed.

    Loss of Gary

A very sad day for everyone. A fitting tribute done by Lee Sales on Auntie this evening for the whole crew. Maybe her dad provided some coaching as he is ex aircrew.

Emphasis on the crew as their work has been consistently good over many years.

A lot of people owe their lives to the much maligned media and a significant number not just sailors in Gary's case.

Time for a rum or 4.

    catch you on the numbers.....

Oh wow, I'm pretty sure Gary was the father of a really good student which I used to teach. My condolences to all of their families, they will be missed.
    Cheers
