    See if you can get a local auto parts store to load test it for you (normally free), was it out of oil/water when he found it stopped usually a motor will happily idle away for hours providing everything is good. On the flip side been a backpackers car it was undoubtly purchased for about $50 from another backpacker who purchased it from another backpacker its probably done more laps of Australia than the average long haul truckie it could be simply the motor has had a catastrophic failure when left to idle, better there than just past the black stump.

    Na the oil and water is fine.
    his first van (2months ago) was a delecia which also blew up within a wk of buying it. Thats why he bought toyota Hiace with no backpacker history, He bought it off an elderly couple who owned it since new and had it regularly serviced. 200 000klms which is nothing for those 2.8 diesels.
    Ive told him to either buy a Bicycle or go back to Canada

    The 2.8 litre (3L) diesel engine requires 5000km oil changes, IF you get it to the 10,000km mark it WILL spin a big end or main bearing, especially if started on a cold morning and left idling as the oil WILL be like thick sludge. I have seen many of these engines fail in this manner. They MUST get oil and filter changed at a MAXIMUM interval of 7500km.

    Makes no difference running synthtic or mineral oils either, these 3L and 5L (3 litre)engines soot up worse than almost any other diesel I have worked on. The 2H 6 cyl was a bad one for sooting up etc, I have had to poke a screwdriver through the 'oil' to get it to drain out of the sump after removing the plug before!! They don't have such fine bearing tolerances as the 4 cylinder engines and generally will survive such abuse reasonably well

    Sounds very like a siezed engine to me

    Push/tow starts should only ever be tried in fourth or whatever gear is direct drive. But if you tried third, and it didn't turn the engine, it is probably seized.
