    Yet another recovery death

Just saw a horriffic story on the news.
A young mother was killed during a recovery on a beach north of Geraldton today, her 3 children witnessed the accident.
Film footage showed the tow vehicle,a 60 series toyota, with a bent towbar tounge.Apparently the woman was hit in the throat by the towball, she was in the passenger seat.
SAD,when will people learn NEVER use the towball to recover.

Sad thing is that she has probably paid the ultimate price for the stupidity of someone else.

If they had only looped the strap around the tow bar then around the tounge,or ball for that matter, any failure would have directed the force towards the towing vehicle rather than the ball becoming a missile.

I think the reporters should point out that this was avoidable, and let it be known that using the towball with a snatch/tow rope is so dangerous.
no good just describing it as a freak accident.

    Can only agree.
I have seen recoveries done that way too often, and stopped people and shown them how to thread the strap safer,THEY LOOK AT YOU LIKE YOU HAVE 2 HEADS!!!!
We have a warning bulletin on our notice board at work at the moment, from WALGA(WA local gov),it involves a failed recovery of a grader by a grader.Important for me,as I steer a grader and have to constantly recover bogged heavy machinery.
I tried to get the bulletin off the net, cant do so,will see if I can get it from the office.
The snatch strap they were using, which in the picture looks MUCH like a normal 4x4 strap let go,operator recieved severe head injuries.Strap came thru the rear window, also busted the front window and door window, looks like most of the strap ended up in the cab.
We use a HEAVY drag chain, links are 3/4" dia,I dont even know if its strong enough for what we do.
Will be asking questions monday morning!!!!

    whats next?

Poor lady. Someone has used their right boot instead of their brain.

Get the word out to your favorite off road magazine, to tell people to use safe operating practises.

Before the arm chair critics start calling to have the snatch strap banned.

    Cheers Arthur
