Thread: V8 disco 1 on soft sand

Performance on sand is almost entirely a function of tyre pressure. Everything else is secondary - how low did you drop your tyres?

hey big ED, I think your problem really is only a lack of familiarisation between you and your vehicle. If youre in a Land Rover club(if youre not try and join one) get some advice from other members and get out with them and find out how capable your disco is.Your jaw will drop and your smile will be from ear to ear.

15psi front and rear. There was never a fear of being bogged and not being able to drive it out, just surprised at the lack of torque from the engine. :thumbsdown

yep MR automotive do a sweet cam for that but I suspect that you may have been in the wrong gear and bit light on the right boot. also if you're running a taller tyre thats going to hurt you plenty if you havent also had the diffs/tcase changed.

I am really surprised that you didn't like the performance of the v8 on sand.

I have always had a ball in my range rover when I get on to the beach (especially in to the sand dunes). I think its a just a matter of getting used to sticking the right boot in so you can the most out of the v8, also like ramblingboy42 said, you need to familiarise you self with the car and work out what gears work best in different situations.

My range rover has all the running gear out of a 96 disco, running on 33x12.5 MTs and I very rarely drop tyre pressure.

Tune up is as good as it will get for working out of the garage; plugs new, dist cap and rotor in good condition, new plug wires rated better than stock, cylinder head gaskets just replaced, all valves removed from head and deposits cleaned from them and valve seals replaced. Ignition timing set higher than spec at idle but below max at high rpm (max recommended 36*).

Gear selection is what its all about I suppose. thought it should be able to hold a higher gear than it was able to. Had it in Hi and Lo lock to test the transfer case as this was the first time out on the soft sand (close to the Signa wreck). 4L V6 in the Prado will blow the 3.9L out of the water I think, had a Prado a few years ago and never had a worry about not enough power, no matter what I was doing.

Haven't driven a Disco 8 but my experience with euro 8's and their V twin bike motors. They are not your grandpa's holden grey motor that work at 2rpm and fall off the top of the torque curve at 6rpm, rev the snot out of them its how they are designed to run.

They're not a chev small block either apparently, maybe I should drop a 350 into it, wonder what a conversion kit will cost.
I'm not adverse to revving the crap out of it other than it sounds like it will explode if it goes above 4000!!

Don't have the cash for a total rebuild right now.
