    Winch Wiring.. ?

    Hey Guys,

I've just bought a new winch (Tigerz11 - because I'm a cheapskate) and was wondering if it's ok to wire it directly to the alternator?

It's supplied with 1.8m of cable and won't quite make it to the battery under the passenger seat.

I'm tossing up in my head if the winch's power requirements will follow the path of least resistance and try to pull 400amps from the alternator of if the battery (which is wired to the alternator) will jump in...

    What do you reckon?

Yep starter motors the place. Checked to see how the earth lead from the battery is connected to the body and connect the earth to the samething.
ie. On the Puma's the earth cable comes straight from the battery to the chassis and from there to the vehicle body. Hence I connected my earth lead from the winch to the chassis.

Or just go to supercrap and get a couple of lengths of cable to do the job.

I fitted and wired my el cheapo Ironman, complete with in line isolator, and it works perfectly with all connections good and solid. I have no mechanical/electrical ability whatsoever. If I can do it, anyone can do it - just don't rush it.

On the subject of the Tigerz11 winch itself, you might find this post useful.

Please let us know what type inline isolator you used (I need to do the same).

    Thanks in advance.

Afraid it just came with the kit. Its quite simple, a large plastic key to a switch with a couple of big terminals. I just screwed the base to the front of the battery compartment (bout a 2.5cm hole required for the keyhole) and hook on the positive cable. Turn the key to make a connection. I have seen them for sale in auto stores.

please replace the ironman switch with a better quality one. for $15 or so put a NARVA switch in. have heard of heaps of the supplied ironman ones failing (20+ of them)
