    Cairns Holiday - Must do's?

The wife and I will be holidaying in Cairns for a week or two from the 18 October.

    So far we’ve pencilled in
    Kuranda train and skyrail,
    Daintree trip
    Reef trip
    Paronella Park

Are there any “must see” attractions that anyone can suggest?

Anyone recommend from personal experience a good operator for reef trips? (We are considering doing one where you overnight on the boat).

    Cheers

We had a recommendation to go and see the Undara Lava Tubes as a must see. Unfortunately we did not get time so cannot give a first hand appraisal. See link for details:

Undara was pretty cool. You can stay there overnight also.

If you have time, the Atherton tablelands are lovely also. Check out the lakes if you go up there.

This is fun, Blazing Saddles - ATV riding tour details, Cairns Queensland Australia
We did it and had a ball.

Also the Rafting tours are sensational in the right season on the Barron and Tully. Tully is a lot more serious than the Baron but Baron is still great.

If youre to do the Daintree, you could stay at Wonga Beach, then drive the Creb Track (include Roaring Meg), stay at Ayton Welcome | Home Camping Accommodation Cabins Daintree Bloomfield Cape-trib Cape-york Cooktown and come down the Daintree. A very nice two days indeed.

If you are driving South then chuck a right at Kennedy and up the range to GossHen (where the first Survivor Aust was filmed) then down to the Valley of Lagoons (still in flood, meaning flowing well) flora and fana reserve and free. Then South to Camel Ck and on to Hidden Valley (can stay there at the cabins) and on to Paluma Dam (can camp there $) through Paluma (walk the rain forest trails if you are up to it) and down for 17 odd ks to the highway.

Then if you have time PM and I can offer more

    Regards,
    PeterW

I should mention that we aren;t taking the Landy - east in to too much of our holiday in travel tme. Will be flying up and working on some day tours, etc. MAY rent a car for a few days if we have to.

    Hey Vlad,
I live in the northern beaches of Cairns. Are you staying in Cairns, or some place such as Palm Cove? The northern beaches are nice, and Palm Cove has lots of accommodation, and places to eat. The swimming just off shore is probably not what you would call nice, but out to the reef is lovely. Green Island is a favorite spot for us to go snorkeling, and there is a hotel on the island. Once the tourists head back on the last boat (1630) You have the island to your selves. I have not stayed there personally, but many of our friends have, and have enjoyed it.
The Skyrail, Karunda train is nice to do (once). I would recommend taking the train up, and the Skyrail down, as you don't have to listen to the brakes for the whole ride. Or if you are not into trains, do the Skyrail up, and back down. Crystal Cascades ( a local river, and swimming hole) is a nice place for picnics, and walks. A car ride up to the table lands is a nice full day out. Much like the hills back behind Apollo Bay in Victoria. As I recall you were from around that area at one point in time. Feel free to ask any specific questions about the area, and I will try and answer them, as we have lived here less than a year so far. I personally love Cooktown for the history, and location. Feels like Cairns was 30 years ago, but you need at least a few days for the trip. The main thing to see anything other than a resort pool, and umbrella drinks is to hire a car. Easy to navigate. Keep the mountains on one side, and the ocean on the other (harder to do at night)!! The drive to Port Douglas is much like the Great Ocean Road, but with much less traffic. Along the way is Hartley's Crocodile Farm, which is worth a look, or at least the Cairns Tropical Zoo in Palm Cove (Some really big Crocks here too). It is small, but for the price of admission, you can come back the next day also.
Give me a hoy when you are in town, and we can catch up, If I'm not off working somewhere.

    Cheers,

    Ken
