Pulling a Premier Winch apart - can't get alloy cap off motor end...

Any hints as to how I get the metal cap off of the 12v motor end of a Premier DV-9000 winch at all?

I've undone the 2 long bolts that go all the way from one end to the other (maybe 300mm long), and the two little screws that look like they hold on some internal copper electrics, but I can't get the cap off. There is a plastic "plug" at the end of the cap (in line with the motor shaft) that I can't get out, if that is relevant.

The cap is loose and 'floating', it just does not want to separate from the main windings body. There are some plastics/electrics underneath, so I don't want to just wade in with a big screwdriver and lever it off.

If someone had a diagram of what was underneath, that'd be excellent. Have done a general troll around here and on Google but can't find a repair manual for any Premier winches at all.

    Thanks
    David

my money says that the armatures commutator is stepped and the brushes are sticking in the lip.

would you stop spreading my trade secrets around...

I dont advise hitting this with the mallet unless you are willing to do a brush rebuild or potentially redo stator windings.

Alright - I'll go and rough it up a bit. At the moment it is still in a working state, so I don't really want to bugger it up.

BTW - it looks like it has had close to zero use, so would the brushes be stepped in that case? I think it has had 5 years being stuck out in the weather on a bull bar, but not ever used in anger. The fairleads are in almost mint condition.

Will report back in a while.

I hit it as hard as I dared with a rubber mallet, but no go.

Am now soaking things in some pentrating oil to see if that helps any.

Wish I could get a diagram to see what I was working with underneath the cover. It is alloy, and has gone all white and chalky, so I am presuming that it has bound itself to the bearing inside.

Maybe I'll just re-paint the cover and re-assemble while it is still a going concern. Thought it would be good to re-grease things, but not at the expense of ruining it.

Surely that's a place to look for a screw/clip holding the armature on? If the winch is off the vehicle you could always bring it around tomorrow.

Thanks BeeUtey. I got back to it tonight, after letting it soak in penetrating oil for a few days, and lo-and-behold, it came apart! Nice. The roller bearing was stuck in the alloy housing where it had gone all chalky.

I got a surprise when it all came apart so I ended up with the centre spindle on the floor and all 4 brushes popped out.

The motor is in pretty good nick, but the gear side of things is a bit poorly. Quite a bit of rust in the clutch mechanism, so I've cleaned all that out and am now waiting for the paint to dry where the flaky alloy areas were.

Hopefully I haven't buggered it up, and it will come alive when I re-assemble it on the weeekend.

    It lives!

I found a seized bearing in the gear-set. The one that goes the highest speed. It was rusted solid. Went down to the local motor-parts place with the old bearing and got a brand new one for $6.50.

Put it all back together with a re-grease etc and it went first go, so very pleased about all that.
