    Which type of Jack?

For as long as I can remember Ive had my hi-Lift strapped to the side of the roofrack.

Now Ive splashed out and put a Foxwing Awning on to accompany the rooftent and have had to remove the hi-lift. Now I have nowhere to put it.

Whilst figuring out where it could go it got me thinking... I can only remember a handful of times Ive had to use it over the last 10 years, even then a bottle jack would have done the job.

So, what jacks do everyone use? Bottle jack or something else?

I'm probably going to look to buy another one so any suggestions on good units would be welcomed.

I have a 3T trolly jack at home, so I just need something to allow for wheel changing etc etc whilst out and about.

    Thx
    Jon
    Regards,
    Jon

Like you I rarely use my hi lift but there have been occassions where it has done the job better and faster than a bottle jack could have done. In particular when I've needed to lift the vehicle high enough to get rocks or logs under a wheel when in ruts. It's also come in useful for other things in the workshop such as straightening my bull bar.
When we travel we seldom have rear seat passengers these days so it lays across the floor in the back.

    Exactly Jon!

Hi Lifts are the "look like a real offroader" accessory

I haven't used the one I was given 8 years ago - Ever!

Whilst they have their uses, they are so heavy and the weight penalty overrides to usefulness.

I've only needed a simple 2 stage bottle jack to assist where needed.

yeah, I carried an old wallaby jack around for ages (which I never used.....and subsequently sold it for a song)
I also used to carry a 35metre heavy duty towing cable, thimbled and swaged and again never used, gave that away.....have you used it yet Harry?

The only reason I have a Hi-lift is because I tow a camper, it is carried in case I break the Jockey wheel or I need it to lift the camper to change a wheel, I carry a 4ton bottle jack for the car.

And I have always thought I should get one.
That has been my issue - where to put it. (I guess I have room now I have the 101)
I have got by with a standard Disco1 bottle jack. Maybe I should just stick with it.

I have always liked the idea you could use the jack longitudinally as a winch - (albiet 1m at a time).

Ummmm... bit hard to use a bottle jack on sand, Bob
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food

A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking

We use a bottle jack for the day to day things as flats or tail shaft greasing / wheel bearing checks, ...

The Hi Lift has saved us a few times in bad bogs, really the only reason it comes along.
