Holiday in Tasmania - where to stay in Launceston

    Howdy all

Only 2 weeks to go before we head off on our 4 month long tour. Woohoo!!

For the Tasmanians out there, we're spending almost all of December on your fantastic isle.

One query we have is where is the best place to stay in Launceston? We need somewhere to pitch the tent (actually a camper trailer it is). We'll be there for Christmas. We know there's a Big4 just out of town at Hadspen and another place on the southern outskirts, but what is the best place to stay?

Doing Tassie anticlockwise from Devonport, can't wait .

    Cheers

Sounds good mate, hopefully the weather should pick up by the time you get here

What type of place do you want to stay?

    How close to town?

    What sort of luxuries?

    G'day Jock

Hoping you might have chimed in. We're after somewhere with power as we'll have spent the last 8 days free camping our way from down past Hobart (Cockle Creek) up to north of St Helens (Bay of Fires). And it'll be Christmas, so a bit of "luxury" would be nice (ie hot showers, power, laundry, pool and playground etc...).

    Cheers

About 30 k's east from memory is Myrtle Bank camp ground.
$3 a night when we stayed earlier this year, large riverside sites with fireplaces (as well as plenty of non-riverside space) and good facilities.
I was told its a site that was privately gifted to the council for use as a public camping area, on the proviso that it mustn't run at a profit (hence the low fees).
We've stayed there a couple of times around March, so no idea how busy it gets at Christmas. Definitely need to book.

Edit: only saw the luxury requirements after I posted..

I'll have to have a bit of a think

To be honest I can't think of anywhere like that atm

Caravan Parks would be your main option with most of that stuff, apart from the pool. There is one in Legana as well, bout 10mins north of town

    Tassie at Christmas

Try Longford C'V.Pk, but it would be wise to book.
Not nearly as noisy as Hadspen, shops etc nearby. A riverside setting. Not far from Midlands and Bass Highways. Good facs.
    A historic town.

Glendhu is in Launceston, but too noisy being next to L'ton's Southern Outlet - 80kph race uphill and down hill.

Hadspen C.P. is next to the Bass Highway on a flatish stretch. Shops and some history nearby.

Wave as you pass us down south.

I was thinking Longford would be a good spot, as long as it's not underwater

I wasn't sure how far out of town you wanted to be though

    I Recommend

Yep, Longford or Evandale both good sights in the north Evandale has more to see and the Sunday markets are very, very good and if you are into old buildings Clarendon house is a must, in the south I would recommend Sorrell or Primrose Sands RSL if you are towing a van as the let you camp for free .

Yep Longford c.p gets my vote. If you're into fly fishing you can get a trout on fly while sitting in your camp chair

Nice pub within easy walking distance too. Easy access to plenty of interesting spots. Had some great fishing by floating down the river in a cheapie blow up raft from the bridge upstream with a few beers hanging over the side. Maybe not when in flood though
