The Repco mechanic in Halls Creek spent about four hours on the phone to United Fuel Injectors in Perth diagnosing the problem and worked out that it was a blocked engine breather filter that was causing the problem - forcing oil out and into the engine which was being burnt and coming out of the exhaust.
He didn't have a part, and rather than have us waiting in Halls Creek for 4 or 5 days for a part, has temporarily fixed the problem by putting a hole in the top of the breather filter to allow the engine to breath properly - it certainly seems to have worked!!! He suggested putting a cloth over it to prevent any dust getting in when we drive on.
As soon as I get to a bigger service centre I'll source a new filter and whack it on.
So, hopefully problem solved! If anyone thinks that this doesn't sound like a solution, please feel free to let me know.

Good on that bloke at Halls Creek for finding that problem.
On the strength of that report, I will be washing all of my oil separator / breather's, out tomorrow.
Blow-by does build up a lot of crud in some funny places, having worked on some Fergy TEA20 motor's recently, I have cleaned a lot of rubbish out of under the rocker covers, etc.
The surprising find under one of those covers, mixed in with the crud, was a couple of cupfuls of water.
Thanks for letting us know that outcome with your Land Rover, although it must of gave you some heartache, I'm pleased that the problem is understandable.

Thanks Arthur - yeah a fair bit of heartache, especially when I thought the old girl might be on her last legs. I was really happy that so many forum member voted to give the old bus a second chance - warmed the cockles of my heart!!! I guess the good thing about things going wrong with your car is you learn more about the car, what can go wrong, why and how to fix it! And, with an older model defender like mine, most of it is easily fixable as long as you can get the parts - might be a bit more tricky with the new models and all their electronic wizardry. . .Quote:

Blknight very kindly helped me source the required part, which I've ordered and is being shipped to Broome. We'll wander slowly over there where I'll install the new filter and we'll be on our way again. We've decided to modify our trip plans and head south to Perth from Broome - rather than going too remote - just to make sure everything is ok with the car and get her fully serviced.
FYI - Blknight suggested fitting a sponge over the top of the filter where the hole has been punched in. He said that vapourised oil may exit the hole and pose a fire risk - the sponge should catch most of that vapour and we'll check it regularly en route to Broome (hence the decision not to take the Tanami). A very handy tip!
He also suggested getting a compression test as leaking rings may also be contributing to the smoke, so we'll sort that out in Perth when we get the service done.
Once again, thanks to everyone for your prompt and very helpful suggestions, offers of accomodation assistance etc. And thank you to Blknight for helping me to source the relevant parts. It's greatly appreciated.
