Car is old and buggered - time to buy a new one.
Problems are minor and worth repairing. Give the old bus a chance!
Too hard to advise without looking at vehicle. Need workshop assessment.
We've just limped into Halls Creek in WA and have the car in at the Repco mechanic (non-landrover mechanic).
Vehicle is a 1998 110 Defender (300 Tdi) with 302,000kms on the clock. Have just travelled 300-400km on a remote road (Duncan Rd) with huge plumes of bluish white/grey smoke pouring out of the exhaust. Smell of oil is strong. Exhaust pipe doesn't have any wet oil - just dry grey residue from smoke. Smoke doesn't seem to be there at higher revs or at cruising speeds (e.g. 80km/hr), but when we slow down the smoke picks up and when we come to a stop it pours out (though tapers off once the car has idled for 5 or 10 minutes). There is alot of oil being splattered around the engine bay (driver's side), but the exhaust/inlet manifold (???) where turbo is all seems clean, so hopefully not a turbo issue. I've put in over a litre of oil in the last 300km and dip stick still showed low level. Managed to limp into Halls Creek today.
Other than smoke/oil leaks, the car seem so be running perfectly well - engine sounds good etc.
I'm no mechanic, but could give more symptons if needed. We're in the middle of a big Oz trip and I guess we just need thoughts as to whehter this might be a simple fix, or much more serious - in which case, whether we need to be thinking about a new vehicle.
Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated - we might be able to pass on suggestions to the mechanic in Halls Creek; or just start making preparations to get the vehicle shipped down to Perth and consider options.
Thanks.

Sounds like the old head gasket trick ! 300TDI at 300000k's !! when was the head gasket last done . Pity your so far North , get it to Newman and we will fix it for you !!
Any idea what's going on in the cooling system?
Is the coolant level changing? Using water, pushing water out?
Oil in the water, water in the oil?
Running hot?
Sorry to hear of your troubles. If the engine runs well then that is a start! So I take it idle is smooth and even on all cylinders?
If I understand the symptoms, you have BOTH smoke from the exhaust at low-med revs AND an external oil leak?
The first step will be to trace the external oil leak.
The oil that the engine is burning must be either getting past the rings, valve stem seals (unlikely), or via the turbo. The turbo would typically be the first port of call.
Removing the oil filler cap while the engine is running will tell you if the engine is breathing too heavily (i.e. worn/damaged rings).
Any decent mechanic should be able to do all of the above to diagnose the problem.
Sorry to say that if the guy who owns the mechanic's shop is the same as the guy who owns the repco parts store, he did not believe me that landrovers are now metric, so will probably be using imperial spanners to work on your landie...
I hope you can grin and bear the tirades about how landies are crap and the only suitable vehicle for the kimberley is a landcruiser.
EDIT - JC is the man who knows. Head gasket it may indeed be.
doing a shifty rebuild of the engine should take a decent mechanic less than 3 days to do, and about a week delay on parts.
I'd almost bet that finding a semi decent second hand donk from a wreck, pulling it and having it mailed to and then installed would cost you less than you would loose out on selling the deefer and then buying another tow vehicle.
get the mechanic to pull the crank case ventilator off start and run the engine and see what comes out of that.
pull the glow plugs and see how they come out after the engines been started and run briefly.,
do a compression check
Did you overfill the engine oil at some point?
is the cooling system pressurising?
I suspect rings (which isnt that big of a deal you can do them without taking the engine out.)

Hi Mark and Sandy
First undo the hose going from the turbo into the bottom of the intercooler.
If it is very oily, get another turbo and dont run it until its installed because if the turbo seal is crook, it may get to the stage of a runaway motor.
Then if that pipe is clean, scratch that problem off the list and then go on with the order that Blknight.aus has laid out.
Cheers Arthur
Hi NiceOneGuv - doesn't look like the coolant levels have changed; and temp guage in the vehicle is reading normal (although it did feel in the cabin that there was more heat then usual coming through the firewall, but then it was also a hot day).
Whether or not things are pressurising propely, that's something I can get the mechanic to check.
