That's a good offer! I take it it would be too much of a risk for us to drive it down to Newman from Halls Creek (if we stock up on sh*t loads of oil to top up as we drive)???

What sort of $$$ would I be looking at to get the head gasket sorted out (where ever we can get help)???

    Thanks

Thanks all for the advice so far - I'll take these suggested checks to the mechanic in the morning for his consideration . . .

RAC will help get the car out of Halls Creek if it takes longer than 24hrs to fix up here, so could get it down to a better service centre if needed.

The fella in Halls Creek has just rung and has spoken to folks in Perth and thinks he's getting onto the issue, subject to some cold engine tests in the morning . . . hopefully we get some good news.

Thanks again everyone - this forum is great!

if it turns out to be the turbo I just so happen to have a tdi300 turbo I was going to do a howto on a rebuild on. let me know and I'll priority a set of bits for it, build it wednesday and then forwards it on to you

a head gaskets about 3 hours worth of work.

given you're in the middle of no-where if you get a parts list to me I'll get you parts at my cost price (unless someone can do better) and delivery should be within 4 working days.

is the smoke actually coming out of the exhaust,or is it possibly an oil leak onto something hot.

Thanks Blknight - that's very, very kind of you. The mechanic in Halls Creek phoned late today, and he's been speaking to some turbo specialists in Perth and, subject to a few test, thinks he's onto it - and, while he wouldn't state what he thought it was until he's completed the testing, he seemed to be suggesting it was neither the turbo or the head gasket. Once I hear back from him I'll let you know and get your thoughts. He seems pretty competent though, which is something!

As for me doing the job myself - I'm a complete dufus when it comes to mechanics! Something I intend to put to rights when we finish this trip! Hopefully joining a landrover club (and using this forum) will help me to improve my skills!

In the meantime, thanks so much for your generous offer. If I need to, I'll take you up on it.

Hey Lewie - it's definitely coming out of the exhaust (not from off it) - in great pluming clouds. We're talking swamp fogging, smog busting, volcanic proportions!!!! If the Landy had wings (aka Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) we could perform aerial sign writing!

Please just take a little solace in the fact that even good old tough 80 series wagons chuck head gaskets as well. Last week i dragged one with my work hi lux 120ks down to Sandfire where they might be able to get some help. As it was the poor buggers that owned it went thru 30 litres of water trying to limp it in to Sandfire.
I'm in Derby and I probably can't do much for you but if you think I can help drop me a line or call me on 0467 776748

    Cheers

Sorry to hear that the old girl has broken down.
I live in Hedland and I have a TDI discovery that if needed I could rob some parts off for you.
you are a bit far away for me to come up there but if you end up in hedland your more than welcome to stay at my house while you sort out the old girl. If you are keen then send me a PM and i can get somthing sorted for you.
