The D1 will never be a rocket though.
Well it took a while but I found one, 1996 Tdi manual with D-gas 147k on the clock and in pretty good nick.
Geez there's some crap out there, they're either straight as a die but have never seen a spanner or mechanically sound(ish) and look like they've been rolled off a cliff.
This one seems to be mechanically sound and just rolled down a small hill, not a bad bus for a starting point.

Thanks for your help guys!
Struth Mick asking for an opinion on here is like chucking a bleeding pig into a river full of piranha's - a blood bath.
Must admit though all good answers
That looks like a nice vehicle to me,do yourself a favour and do a cooling system overhaul and change all the oils and give the Tdi a valve set/tune up.A $1 spent now will save a 100 down the track. Pat
Cheers Pat, already lined up for next week. Got too much on this weekend to get it done. Got a Detroit and Hi Tuffs to drop in too:twisted:
Have you checked the history on the timing belt.
Also recommend a thorough grease of the UV joint and propshaft, based on personal experience.:(
Cheers Mick, will add it to the list.
