On the face of it they seem comparable, except only the D1 mentions "full service history", which is a strong point in its favour. But I guess what you are asking is really which, D1 or D2, is preferable.

It depends what you want. Although the cars look very similar, and have very similar specification, there are major differences.

The D1 is effectively a downmarket version of the RR Classic, with, in this case, a relatively new diesel engine that is ultimately derived from the 1956 diesel. It has the experience of twenty years of production behind it, but some of the features are definitely getting a bit dated.

The D2 is effectively a redesign of the vehicle that updates many aspects of the detail design and provides a completely new engine. Unlike the D1, very few parts are interchangeable with other Landrovers or earlier models (for example, wheels back to 1948 will fit the D1 but not the D2). While this gives a more refined, and in some ways better performing vehicle, not all the improvements are universally seen as plusses. For example, the dropping of the centre diff lock on the assumption that traction control replaced it was so badly received that it was later restored. The other problem is that parts tend to be more expensive, as the production life of most of them was a lot shorter - on the other hand, it can be claimed that you need fewer of them!

    Hope this helps

What John said. However I would add that the D1 is not worth that IMHO - despite the condition.

We are happy with our D1, however we paid a fraction of that for our 1997 300Tdi. Admittedly, not in as good condition, and about 90k km more on the clock.

Cool thanks fellas, there's a plethora of reading there.
I've had a 96 Tdi SE previously, not a bad bus and something that I was comfortable doing most work on myself. Couldn't pull the skin of a custard though, overtaking roadtrains was a matter of lining it up from 1/2 a k back and planting the foot. Are there any chips or performance mods for the Tdi's that don't cost the earth? And have more than a placebo effect.
Any major foibles with manuals v autos?

Are parts that much more for the D2 and how hard ($$$) is it to reconnect the CDL?

    thanks again,

    thanks again,
Tdis have completely mechanical injection, so you need to modify the pump (etc) for more power. There are a few threads on here.

TD5s can be chipped (and go better standard). They are also overall a stronger engine.

Turning up the fuel pump on a D1 is relatively easy, but don't overdo it.
They like better exhausts. There are also larger intercoolers available. Mine also appreciated the better airflow from a snorkel.

D-gas is a useful power/economy boost for both the D1 and D2. A better exhaust will help too!
