For mobile coverage there is only one choice, Telstra, most of the other carriers will disappoint you once out of the cities/major centres.
IIRC Telstra are the 'only' carrier north of Cairns up the cape.

We are shipping our old Series Landrover from Uk to Oz for a 10 month trip, campng along the way, the Landrover gets into Sydney approx 22 October and we arrive on 2 November, not sure when we can pick it up as has to go through Quarantine and Customs, we pick it up from Port Botany so it would be good to find somewhere cheap to stay close by but with public transport access into the city.
has anyone got any suggestions (not rude!)
Also we will be buying pay as you go mobile phone sims, which company would have the best coverage for the whole country.
We hope to meet up with some of you guys when we get there.
thanks

Definitely Telstra.
Look for one of their "Blue Tick" Next G phones.
I have a Samsung C5220 which works well and is a Blue Tick phone. It's an older model flip phone but is still around and should be cheap.
If you have an unlocked 3G phone that works on 850MHz, you should be able to use that in Oz. An iPhone should work.
What do you presently have at home?

what the others said, Telstra is the more expensive of the carriers and is the phone company that people love to hate but the only one that has decent coverage. I suggest a handset that has an external antenna jack on the back, I reccomens ZTE handset eg Telstra T106 , you can get a new prepaid ZTE for around $60 outright last time I looked. And get yourself a NextG Broomstick antenna $120 for your bullbar & a FME to ZTE patch cord (ebay) $20

Maybe see if any pubs around the area have accommodation, it can work out okay. Failing that, maybe Formule One?
Any pictures/information on the series? Happy travelling!

if you get to Tom Price in the pilbara Western Australia, be sure to look me up, can show you some great spots around here and you can stay at ours for a bit if need be.

Just a suggestion, get out of the city and head north, central coast/ newcastle to go to stockton or the national parks or south to wollongong/ nowra to explore more . Sydney is very expensive and once youve done the bridge, harbour opera house, darling harbour, casino, zoo ,manly, bondi, powerhouse museum, kings cross etc. you will be itching to leave.
Try for a place at kogarah or hurstville as both have a station so you have cheap transport around while waiting for you landie and are reasonably close to botany.
Formule One motel at the Airport which is near enough to Port Botany is probably the cheapest around, and it also has good access to transport to and from the airport and city. Its not the nicest or homely motel but it will be clean.
Do you mean total area coverage? Although Telstra is the best coverage, its still only around 10% of the land area, so for 90% of your travels you will still be out of communication. The only full coverage you can get is a satellite phone or HF radio (both can be hired).
