Selling your scrap gold - some valuable advice.

If you are considering selling your old jewellery or scrap gold and silver, please read this and think before you agree to a price and sell to the first place you go.

I always like to do my research. I won't name names as such (ok I will, no loyalties here, just the facts). I went first to one of those gold buying kiosks in the shopping centres that seem to have popped up just about everywhere, they have their flash looking displays and their fake $50 notes on the counter, you know the ones. Also took it to Cash converters, who claim in their advertising that they offer the highest price for scrap gold. Then went to a small independent jeweller who buys scrap gold in Brisbane City (Citigold).

Gold Buyers kiosk prices it at $400, that seems pretty good for a bag of junk, told me if I sold it then and there it would be $440. So took it to Cashies who were a little better at $495, the jeweller in the city, $665! Same bag of bits, the difference being that the Citigold shop scans with a thermal imager, giving you an exact gold content, the others use the acid test and markings which is not at all accurate (one piece that was hallmarked as 9CT gold was actually 17CT so worth nearly double).

So a huge difference for a little bag of jewellery and scrap gold and silver that was about half a bank plastic coin bag in volume.

My advice - don't accept the first seemingly good offer, shop around. you can google citigold and they even accept mailed in jewellery if you live outside Brisbane (they send out a prepaid bag and everything is above board) and all the current buy prices are on the website too.
