Thread: Cost of public transport - UNREASONABLE!

I pay about $9 a day return for a 12km each way trip into Brisbane City on the busway. I think that's good value. And there's nowhere cheap to park in the city. It means we only need one vehicle, not two, so that's a big saving.
Agree with those above who say the real cost of running a vehicle is usually higher than people realise. Fuel is only a minor part of it.

More than that there is effectively no all day parking at the station and none at the bus stop, so I would have to walk in all weather. Once on the bus during peak periods it takes over an hour (in fact for a 7am start I have to be at the bus stop at 5.40 am). Even in peak periods the drive to work takes 45 min or 15 min in off peak, why would I consider catching the bus at any cost?

So the cost/Km comparison is irrelevant.
Similar for me - I live 41km from work, in a rural area, on acreage. It's a 3km walk to the nearest bus stop, and then a 1 hour bus ride to get within 1km of the office, and the only bus that would get me to work on time leaves at 5.20am. The return journey costs $11.50, which is pretty reasonable considering some of the costs people are reporting here.

However, in the car it takes 35-45 mins, depending on traffic, and the fuel cost for a return journey (about 3l, at $1.40/l) is about $4.20.
(Yes, 3l. My commuting car is a VW Golf "Bluemotion", which averages between 3.5 and 4.0l/100km).

So the bus as a mode of transport is out for me. More expensive, and takes twice as long.
