    AUSTRALIAN PEACEKEEPERS RECOGNISED

    The Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Warren Snowdon is encouraging all Australians to recognise the ongoing contribution of our peacekeepers on Australian Peacekeepers Day.

    Today marks 64 years of Australia’s contribution to peace operations around the world, starting with the first United Nations peacekeeping mission in 1947.

    A ceremony was held in Canberra today at the site of the future Australian Peacekeeping Memorial on Anzac Parade.

    Mr Snowdon said Australia has a proud record of peacekeeping and peacemaking, participating in more than 50 United Nations and multi-national operations.

    “Currently, almost 600 Australian Defence Force and Australian Federal Police personnel are deployed in operations across the globe in locations including the Middle East, Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands and Sudan,” Mr Snowdon said.

    “Today is an opportunity for Australians to reflect on the important role of our peacekeepers and peacemakers in providing support and assistance to victims of conflict, often in unstable and dangerous locations.”

    Australia’s peacekeeping roles have included military observation, logistics support, ceasefire monitoring, landmine clearing, supporting democratic elections, humanitarian aid and repatriation of refugees.

    “Men and women from the Australia Defence Force, the federal and state police forces and Australian Government agencies have all been involved in our long history of peace operations,” Mr Snowdon said.

    The Australian Government is continuing its support for our peacekeepers and peacemakers by funding a University of Melbourne study that investigates the long-term effects on mental health and quality of life of ex-serving Defence Force peacekeepers deployed from the 1990s to 2002.

    It will consider Australian involvement in places such as Rwanda, Somalia, Cambodia, Namibia, Western Sahara and East Timor. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

    Makes me wonder why the political body, on both sides, has refused to index service pensions in the same manner that old age AND political pensions have been..? Yes, they value the service of our Service personnel....but only up to a point. Wonder if the politicians could see fit to 'un-index' their pensions?

    hmmm a study for those who deployed 1990-2002......what about those of us prior to that?We didnt have the super equipment those guys had. But we had the M-60 mmmmm M-60 mmmmm. We starred using ww2 technology. We worked at night with the Mk2 Eyeball and thats all. I just wish they'd do study of my time as peacekeeper so I can claim mental health and quality of life. We couldnt even make home contact for weeks sometimes, those guys had mobiles, computers real time imaging. But.....we volunteered.....and were prepared to do what we had to do with what little we had.

    Still no recognition for australian police who deployed into CIVPOLs with the UN in East Timor. No medical nothing... I'll know when theyre serious because then theyll have done something.

    It will be nice also, when 'They' recognise that a lot of the quoted operations were not peacekeeping, but Peace MAKING!

    Don't mean to offend but what do you mean when you say 'Lost a few mates to Somalia'?

    My interest is related to the facts that my mate was in the APC when LCPL Shannon McAliney was killed, my brother was there with 1 RAR and, I am here in Mogadishu typing this now.

    There is nothing new under the sun, my old Dad was a peacekeeper in Indonesia in 1945, he fought the [ politicaly correct] enemy in New Guinea , went on to Balikpapan, then after the war, had to stay on in Indonesia until those with more time in went home.[fair enough] You take on the Queens shilling ,you accept the risk, do the job, but also expect those who send you into harms way, will look after you after , if you have a problem.I'll leave it at that, Bob
