Harvey Norman 2 for 1 laptop deal

Heard about this deal, and considering we have been thinking about them for the kids for Christmas, thought it could be a good way to same some money.

So, had a quick look on line, found a nice little Asus machine for $594. It ticked all of the right boxes, so I hit the footpath and went into town.

"Sorry sir, we don't have any." was the first answer. "But, there is this model. It's only $1149".

Yea, at twice the price, I dont think so. So I have a look around. Apart from a couple of highly priced Toshiba's, all the rest were Acer.

I do like Toshiba, and have one of their laptops that has given me no trouble at all. But, they do come at a price premium, and the lappies are only for an 8yo & an 11yo.... so.... sorry girls, but I dont think so.

Now, I wont go into details, but for certain reasons, I am not interested in purchasing an Acer.

So, I head on back to the office, and decide to ring the other stores. Funny thing is, EVERY store seems to have sold out of this one model in a couple of hours. Yea, right....

So, basically, if you like Acer, and are after a new laptop, you might want to check them out. Personally, I am taking my business elsewhere.

Just a thought (as my kids are roughly the same age) have a look at the tablets. They are similar to ipads but cheaper and all the pc manufacturerers now have their own version.

Did think of tablets, however, the main requirement is for them to be able to do their homework on them.

The tablets are handy, but they need Excel, Word & PowerPoint for school.

I am thinking about a tablet for myself for work, however, we cant sync it to my laptop, so it would be little more than a fun toy at the moment. And, I can do all of the stuff a tablet does on my Andriod based phone.

Might be worthwhile looking at HP laptops as they (HP) are pulling out of the PC market. Should be some good HP deals out there.

Funny you should mention that. The auctions have already started on Greys...

I just bought a pair of the E-machines laptops they had for $498 each plus one free, so they work out at $250 each.

They are a bit cheap and tacky but good value for money, and for what I want them for they are cheap as chips, even if they die in 18 months time, and a bit of surfing shows you can buy them online for about $400.

They wouldn't price match kogan though, as I am also looking at a new camera, and I have to admit the kogan stuff is RUDDY CHEAP for a canon.

I wanted the asus one you talk about, they had one demo unit, which they wouldn't sell, and I was advised they sold out of the asus ones at 9:15, and I was in their at 10:30, and they had sold over 200 laptops so far.

I guess its just an AMD run out thing as they have some new processors coming out. but as per usual harvey norman rope you in with a suggesting advert which isn't as nice as it seems once you get in store.

sorry to tell you this, but these businesses are there for one reason and that's to make profit, but there's no profit in a $498 pc and infact often costs the stores money to sell them, so why bother carrying heaps of them ? oh and the next comment will be "but why advertise them?" . Well let me tell you that at a store level are usually informed of these sales only 1 maybe 2 days prior to it actually happening, absolutely no way to be prepared stockwise. many a time i have been whatching nightly tv only to find out there is a sale starting at my work the following day. so before you all take it out on the sales people and the stores, and accuse them of being untruthful, think about those who have to put up with the same complaint everytime head office drops a sale with no notice.
the stores order there own stock, and they know what sells in a region, and what stock to carry. however the advertising is national, so how can every store be expected to have every model ?

Exactly. One of the first thoughts I had was, "Trade Practices Act - sufficient stock must be held to meet the expected demand."
