    winch

    gday fellow landy owners,

i have a 2010 110 with an arb bull bar fitted, i am researching to hopefully fit a winch to this bar,
what are the pit falls and things to be aware of with this things, obviously the main 4wd mags do comparisons etc, is there that much difference between the ones costing $3000.00 + and the ones costing $1000.00 or less
i always believe that you only get what you pay for and have no problem forking out the readies if necessary, but with most things these days there seems to be a con going on, ie re branded supa market winches, for $400.00 whilst i for a moment dont think these will come up to scratch with the more expensive ones, maybe they do and the top end ones are a con job. i would hate to buy a top price one and everyone on the road tells me i was ripped off. would an overseas on that i see in LRM be a better option ?
i have read plenty of 4WD action mags (subscriber) and different opions from retailers but asking the experts now.

looking forward to hearing back from anyone, cheers dave

plenty of winch threads that you can search on this site concerning those cheap winches (aldi, supercheap et al) ....

.... subject to some common sense provisos about maintenace, regreasing & use, those that have 'em seem to like 'em ...

I'd rather spend $350-$400 for something I'd hardly use than go the whole hog...

.... horses for courses I guess

Yep you do get what you pay for, a plastic geared winch will surely out perform my old Thomas electric/PTO $400 job.

yes but the weight of your cast lump is more likely to fracture the bar off of the chassis.....

hey didnt your bar work fall off once already?

I have a Chinese 12,500lb on the front of my D2.
Repacked the grease and checked it out when I got it.
It was "reasonably cheap", but not an Aldi type job.
Have used it heaps in anger, and for pulling te non moving Series 3 SWB's about, hasn't let me down yet.
I did however, have a 9000lb $450 job before that - and that was a POS.

Magnum 9000lb are about $900 and a great bit of kit, if you're looking at that sort of thing.

The question is...you want it to work, there's potentially $50k of car hanging off it....you don't want it to fail when you DO need it.

    amen to that!

when your car is off the side of a hill hanging off the winch cable, the last thing you want to hear is 'click' 'click' when you go to winch in.....

when your in the ***** and relying on the winch, you;ll be glad you didn;t skimp!
