    rangie 3.5 efi

    Hi all .

On my 3.5 flapper engine ive confirmed a consistent misfire on cylinders 1,3 and 4 with my induction timing light placed on each of the eight cylinder leads . Also with the light on coil lead I can see ignition misfires . My question is ! Is this confirmation by timing light good enough to rule out possibly fuel supply problem . The way I see it if the light indicates misfirng electrics the answer is yes . The misfiring is random and not total dead cylinders . If a fuel problem exists I will still have spark . Do you all agree with my deduction or should I investigate fuel aswell ? .Can I have a lean mixture cause a plug to not fire or does the plug still fire just combustion is faulty .

    Cheers Mark

    Hi Mark
I would be checking the dissy shaft for excessive sideways movement, and for loose electrical terminals around the coil. A test light globe on the ignition coil positive would show any supply faults. perhaps its time for an upgrade dissy and/or ignition amplifier.

A fuel injector misfiring would not show up with a timing light like yours.

    Hello Bee Utey
I see what you mean by a test lamp on the coil positive to check consistent supply . If that test shows a fault I can confirm its in the low voltage coil trigger supply . If that test is fine then it must be in the high voltage side .
You feel I can be confident the an air leak or fuel delivery problem wont stop a plug firing but just cause a combustion problem ?

Lean mixtures may raise the voltage needed to jump the plug gap but the coil pulse should still be affecting the timing light at idle. To test try some new plugs with a gap around 0.8mm, that will make sure you will always show a spark. Generally any misfire due to weak ignition will get far worse under load, to the point of being barely driveable.

It is also possible that you are seeing the result of a crook ignition coil. It may be breaking down internally.
