The news about Metcash is not bad considering that 80 per cent of the grocery business in Australia is in the hands of Coles and Woolworths.
At one stage the big two were considering in take over Franklins.
What we need is that Aldi use the billons of dollars behind them and squash the big 2. Then again, the market here is small for the german family.

Harvey Norman deserve a good punishing.

We would love an Aldi here in Rocky, apparently they tried to go in to the big shopping centre expansion that we had recently but woolies squashed it. If Aldi put in the effort to source a site and set up shop they would have a very long queue out the door.

costco seem to be expanding, I saw somewhere they are putting in a store in Canberra and Sydney.

Not where I would want to shop everyweek at all, but would put a huge dent in coles/woolies. Its good for some bulk items cheap. But they also sell allot of crud.

Costco are already in Sydney at Auburn.

Aldi and Woolies share the same centre here in Emu Plains. We shop at Woolies because (a) the range is far greater and (b) the delays at the checkout are far fewer. Aldi often has only one checkout in operation and I hate queues.

Will Woolies hardware make a dent in Bunnings here? Dunno - there are two Bunnings stores in Penrith. In fact, I wonder how Hudsons manage to keep running (they aren't far from a Bunnings store).

Just spent the last week in the Qld master home improvement stores ( Woolworth DIY )
been to the Nerang, Tingapla and Springfield and will spend the day on Friday at Morayfield one. Although the first one in Qld opens in about 4 weeks or so. And that is surposed to be Springfield unless you talk to Tingapla who say theirs will be first

The are big and very smart inside. Big wide isle with smart display and posters everywhere and air con though out and polished floors.

They did say there was going to be Mac Cafe in them but i have not seen one with them in yet and i have been pretty noisey in them

Bunnings will be in for a shock , they sell alot of quality stuff at good prices

But Masters are aiming at the female buyer as they found out alot of woman won't go into a bunnings.

They must have thrown millions and millions at it. Today I heared from the masters that there will be 8 more stores opening in Australia before Xmas and WA is next ,with one in Perth in the beginning of 2012

Woolworths did buy a lot of Franklins stores in Sydney about 8-9 years ago, and turned the small ones into 'Food for Less' and bigger ones into full Woolworths stores.

My wife is quite happy to shop at any of three Bunnings (but not the fourth) around here.
